    I'm not surprised because even HYBE made sure to downplay them to show they're reduce dependency on BTS


    Based on an army who went to SK, locals were surprised that BTS were popular. They just see them as another group since there's alot of kpop group nowadays. Also the Busan concert didn't have that much local news coverage.

    I don't think that tweet is painting an accurate picture for us international fans.


    I'm not sure what that ARMY was expecting when she went, but how were locals "surprised" that BTS is famous when they were literally appointed as diplomatic envoys by the former president in the Blue House? That coverage was everywhere. Not to mention they had already won the Order of Merit. That's not given out to just anyone.


    I'm also pretty sure their Grammy nomination was in front page of Korean news, and not the mention national polls taken to discuss their enlistment? Don't they have a law named after them? The one that granted them postponement (that Jin just cancelled)


    Is she saying locals didn't realize just how popular they are overseas?

    A lot of ARMY refuse to acknowledge this because they can’t fathom criticizing Korean citizens or South Korea in general. Usually it’s Kboos or someone with kboo tendencies. This has always been talked about and obvious but if you don’t want to hear it then it’s easy to ignore because BTS are so big worldwide. Korean journalists talked about this very issue years ago. I’m also sure that the relationships that other kpop companies have with the broadcasting/ media companies also play a part in how BTS are downplayed in SK but that is near impossible to prove.
