...In between and outside of fandoms. Especially when it comes to critiquing songs. Like you can't comment on a song or group's flaws because if you aren't part of that particular fandom it's automatically viewed as you being an anti Ofc, I'm talking about casual listeners / very casual fans - not people who listen to an artist's music already "knowing" they're going to dislike the song and just do so to spread criticism.

Do you ever feel like there's gate keeping in K-Pop?

I'll be honest, I'm guilty of this lol
I never actually say anything tho but I make fun of my faves all the time. For example, I always say Signal sucks, etc.
But then when I see someone talks crap about Signal outside the fandom, in my head it becomes

i think a little bit of gatekeeping is okay so long as you're not toxic about it, and kinda expected if you're a devoted fan
but omg using signal as an example
everybody should be allowed to critique that song tbh

There's gatekeeping in the sense of who is considered a true fan or not. For example, I'm 24 and I don't keep up with kpop like I used to, I have 1 full-time job and 2 part-time ones.
I can't watch all the content cuz it's a lot, theres vlives, theres variety shows, reality shows, etc. I also don't buy albums cuz I need to save money.
So lots of people will say to me "oh you're a fake stan" cuz I don't know everything about the groups I stan.

I've seen that too. I usually don't have the urge to judge people because I'm not exactly leading the most productive life either, but some (most) K-Pop stans really need to branch out their hobbies more, preferably to something more valuable than fawning over people they even don't know.
And one full time and two PT jobs,
I could not handle that. Your work ethic must be insane.

well, I'm gatekeeping you then

more like Hungary is going into a recession and has had the biggest price increase out of all the EU and we have an energy crisis coming this winter. so i got no choice, either this or starve.
I think you should still give yourself credit for working hard. Even if it springs from necessity, it still shows a lot of willpower and dedication

Of course there is gate-keeping by the fandoms.
"Go, talk about your own faves" is a often seen refrain even in AKP, by fans who can't handle any criticism, analysis or even observation.
But I don't bother about such self-authorized gate keepers. Idol groups are public entertainers, anybody has the right to talk about them .. casual, motivated or antis...
Do not let Kpop end up as some Medieval Middle Eastern Cult which threatens beheadings etc., if their 'idol' is critiqued etc.,
