Idols and their CFs: is it about quantity or quality? (assume they make the same profit)

  • there's definitely pros and cons to each

    Yep that's what I thought.

Sometimes I do wonder, how much idols could bring people to buy a product that they advertise?

For a really popular group, a special edition product themed around them could really bring in people.

So some things that I think are :

    - in the case of less popular brand, they are using the idols popularity to increase their sales. What the idols get? Money.

I think for this one, the brands are more benefited than the idols (and it should have to, since it's a marketing afterall), since besides making sales, they also increasing their brand awareness to people.

    - for the prestige one, they are also surely picking idols to increase sales. But for this one, I think the one who benefited is the idols rather than the brand. Prestige brand would not just giving money to the idols, but also.. idk what the term for this.. a pride? Value? A class? To their name.

    - so for the cost, I think the less prestige one could cost you more schedule? Like you might had 1-2 day of shot for each brands, and if you had 5, means you will work for more or less 10 days

On the other hand, working on prestige brand would only need a 1-2 days of shooting. Means less work but got the nice cash.

    - so this means quality > quantity for the idols? Well, if we view it from how much work they need to do, then yes.

    - so quantity will be less?

I can't say so, since quantity could also create this sense of "you're popular", since many brands come for you. And if your face is everywhere in many products, people will notice it that you're popular, since human naturally recognize pattern, and you becomes that pattern if you choose the path of quantity.

    - so what would be the best?

    Easy, why not both? ^^

Get a lot of prestige brands

  • Yep that's what I thought.

I love a big effort post, and I agree broadly

    BUT

for the prestige one, they are also surely picking idols to increase sales. But for this one, I think the one who benefited is the idols rather than the brand.

I think the brands benefit more than the idols now. I would have agreed before I saw all the hype that Lisa and V generated for Celine this year, or the K-idols at fashion week. The brand awareness and sheer internet buzz was massive and doesn't occur even when A-list American celebrities appear in shoots. And whatever small percentage of the massive idol fanbase that buys the product is still a lot of people.

On the other hand, working on prestige brand would only need a 1-2 days of shooting. Means less work but got the nice cash.

I think it still depends on the deal. If they have a more 360-degree CF then they might have multiple shoots in different locations, they might have to fly out to Europe more, they might have to appear at galas and brand launches. It can take up wayyyyy more time.

  • I think the brands benefit more than the idols now.

Ah for this one what I mean is, the brand themselves had already established, like even without hiring any idols, their business will still do well. Like I said, the benefit for them is the sales increment. (Not like the less prestige one who can get both sales and building brand awareness)

For V and Lisa, I think that would only happen if the idols themselves had established their own name, their brand. Kinda like when a 2 popular brands decided to collab.

For the work days that you said, well i could agree with that. So it would depends on the commercial projects that they are working on.

But, that kind of project should be also giving more money right? So if that translated to a less prestige brands (quantity type), maybe it is worth of, idk, a full one or two months of work from many many brands? ^^

  • Doing too many and you dilute your own brand. Doing as many as possible is the correct choice for up and coming celebrities (and b-tier celebs who are probably happy to take whatever is coming their way), but once you reach a certain status its probably good to start being a bit more selective and charge premium.

Still, even for top tier celebs there are levels. Take Won bin who hasnt done any acting for thirteen years yet still pulls millions doing a single coffee endorsment every year. His popularity combined with his extremely private persona has basically become his brand, so his impact when he suddenly turns up in a cf somewhere is that much higher and the companies are willing to pay extra for it.

  • one can't say assuming they get paid the same for each since money is a huge criteria for taking on a cf...

because obviously then one would pick quantity since one would get paid more...(assuming you'd get the cf deals)

and hence why there's a tradeoff in terms of the cfs an individual or a group takes....

I would say that even more important than the money is the image each cf is trying to obtain from hiring such idols...
