Kakao M, "We wanted to extend our intl. contract with Spotify, but they declined"

spotify needs kakao m ofc or else they'll lose many users since kakao isn't there

so Spotify was the big bad guy after all...

Ppl were quick to jump on Kakao m when it was Spotify who declined just because of not getting their music in Korea.

If Spotify doesn't have Korean artists, what's the damn point?

well Spotify hasn't put out its statement yet so let's wait till they do

Both sides will posture for a while and then one will eventually cave when they start being affected. tbh I don't know which will break first. While I'm sure Spotify will lose some user engagement, they're so large that it probably won't hurt them too much especially since most of the biggest groups like BTS/Blackpink aren't really impacted. Kakao M will probably end up being the one to cave since they are giving up income, but if there's enough people who switch to YouTube/Apple/Tidal then it may balance out, plus it may push more people to buy digital copies of albums at the least. Regardless it will be a fun few weeks for several teams of lawyers.

According to Spotify's statement earlier today, they're been trying to do this deal for a year and a half, so it may be longer than a few weeks unless something happens like artists/management companies pressuring the distributer. Spotify still has their entire Western catalogue, plus several of the major Korean groups, and is ultimately revenue-protected by its international scope. They'll be under less pressure than Kakao if the talent start getting upset about the lack of fan engagement, worldwide opportunities, and streaming revenue.

Gotcha but in the article stpoify didn't say why they couldn't come to an agreement though right?

So the between-the-lines I'm getting here is "we didn't want Melon to have to compete so we drew it out until the contract expired".

The thing is:

• Spotify can survive without the Kakao M artists
• Kakao M can't survive if their artists leave them
• Kakao M is also in danger if they allow Spotify to enter SK

Spotify really set Kakao M up.

kakao has to cave in at some point. Must be some money related deal issue. If all the artists start pressuring kakao then the process will be faster.
