Does your work require you to do night shifts?

  • Yes. I work the night shift at a Gas station, 10 PM to 6 AM, six days a week (I actually requested to work six days because rent in California is EXPENSIVE).

It took me a few weeks to get adjusted to my new sleeping schedule. I can't have caffeine anymore due to a recent heart scare I had, so coffee, tea and energy drinks are out of the picture.

Doctors say I should avoid sugar too unless it's minimal amounts or already part of my meal i.e. a sandwich has sugar, an apple has sugar but that's completely different than an energy drink, donuts or candy.

I don't sleep much anyways. No more than 5 to 6 hours a day. Just close your blinds, use earplugs if you have to. Maybe invest in black curtains or an eye mask.

It's also important to actually be sleepy/ tired. I'm busy AF at work, so time flies and I feel burned out when I get home, so that helps.

I do IT support for my states health department and we are on a 24/7 rotating schedule, with 8 work days every 2 weeks.

So one week I might have 4 day time shifts 7:30 - 5:00, then 3 days off, then 4 overnight shifts 9:00pm - 6:30 am, then 3 days off again.

I love overnight shifts as I get a decent overtime rate but the work is super easy and I end up watching Youtube/Netflix, reading books, posting on here and other places and whatever. Weekend overnights are even better. REALLY good money and even less work.

  • sounds great

I kind of overstated how lazy we are. During daytimes in particular our service is (like the rest of the health department) stupid understaffed and wait times to get to us for non clinically impacting calls can reach 2 hours. Mind you, that does include Health staff like admin, office, finance groups etc etc, our centre of 60 people fields calls from I believe 90,000 staff that make up my states Health Department.

So night shifts are a bit of an oasis.
