Concert Promotion Company AEG Bets on JPop Being Bigger than KPop

  • The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Avex has formed a new joint venture! AEGX is a new project formed with American concert promotion company AEG Presents. The goal of AEGX is to to spread JPop worldwide and further expand the Asian market for American artists. This will be done by Avex and AEG Presents pooling resources and local expertise in the fields of artist development, venues, festivals, and global touring.

AEG Presents helped break BTS and BLACKPINK in the US, creating a blueprint for how non-English-speaking artists can gain a global audience. The company believes that the same can be done for JPop, and on a bigger scale.

Part of this is due to streaming. JPop streams outside of Japan have grown 117% from January 2019 to January 2021, according to Spotify. “Streaming has kicked down the borders of music discovery and acceptance on the world stage,” says AEG Presents Chief Executive Jay Marciano. “It’s made music borderless.”

AEGX could see Japanese and American acts helping each other out, with American acts opening tours for Japanese acts in Japan, and Japanese acts opening tours for American acts in the US.

    my thoughts

i don't know if i agree. while avex has a more diverse stable of acts than all of kpop. It's hard to believe one company will be that huge internationally.

  • They seem to be smart, Avex send a lot of trainees to Chinese survivals

  • if avex was doing this alone, maybe, but the American company did choose to collaborate with them.

But the point is that avex does not have any act that could generate interest in the American public, I mean, Westerners are not interested in hearing Asians over 30 years old, avex does not have any act of its own that is profitable, perhaps this will serve more for Americans who want to promote in Japan than vice versa

i don't think youre aware of how diversified the acts under avex are. the feeling from the American company is jpop can be bigger than kpop.

my thinking is the goal is to have lots of profitable acts rather than one or two that the “general public want to hear”

Even though they're not associated with avex, i think a group like atarashi gakko has provided what could happen with even minimal, but smart marketing.

  • avex does not have any profitable act of its own, rather it seems a desperate act to avoid bankruptcy

Unless they wanna branch out into various sectors (rock, pop, indie?, etc) and have artists acting on each genre, and instead of having 2 super popular groups like Korea does, they might have tens of mildly popular ones from several other styles, not only pop

Which would give them more diversity, and, as an example, if pop or rock end up getting more attention, they can focus on them, while keeping (or not abandoning) the others, to not lose market

avex does not have profitable acts in any genre, before promoting something in the west they must first create it, and that takes years

avex have many genres, yes, they are diversified, the problem is that most are failed acts, like Faky, acts that nobody in Japan knows about, unfortunately avex did not know how to capitalize on the success they had in the 2000's

first a group like faky has been around for several years, so they're obviously not complete failures. it seems you have the kpop mind set of if an act isn't at the very top and widely known they're failures. there is actually a middle ground.

i mentioned atarashi gakko earlier. they are a group you would consider failures, but after 5 years they got a little promotion in the west. im not saying they're the biggest group in the world, but the tiny exposure has grown their international fandom many times over.

I do not understand the fetish that this forum has with faky, it is an ultra niche group, if you want to target is the west faky is not an option, as I said, if avex wants to get fame and promotions in the west or other asian countires yes or yes you need a successful group, not niche acts

i think your fetish for hating on faky is the confusing thing here.

i don't see why being a successful act in japan is some prerequisite for success in the west. my guess is most people in the west haven't heard of the acts you would deem worthy, so their japanese success really means nothing.

i think what matters is smart promotions and finding an audience. for most acts that will be a niche one regardless if they're hugely popular in japan or not.

  • Iits a good move to promote jpop more globally. It seem that they are finally want to move to international market seeing kpop doing so well.

Is it only avex act that will be promoted?

how about jpop act that already known oversea like babymetal, one ok rock, perfume??

i think the deal is only with avex, but other companies may have their own plans. then there are companies like 88rising
