Would you watch a Mnet's survival show after what happened to Produce 101?

  • Hi, I know that this type of question is kinda "outdated" because Mnet already aired a new survival show last year that was Girls Planet 999. But I wanted to ask this because I'm feeling lost and confused

I watched all the first 3 Produce 101 seasons but in the end I never was a huge fan of the groups that were formed there. But in 2019 I watched Produce X 101 and I absolutely fell in love with the trainees and then when X1's line up was announced I fell in love with the group as well ><

at that time I was part of another fandom for more than 10 years and I had another favorite group, but in a very short time X1 became my ultimate group, I loved them so so much

Then the vote manipulation scandal started and in 2020 X1 disbanded. Their disbandment had a huge impact for me, more than feeling sad, I started feeling unmotivated and then I even gave up on following k-pop...

In 2021, i was feeling a little beter and started listening to kpop again. and then Girls Planet 999 was announced, i watched it because i was curious. GP999 had so many similarities with Produce101, and despite everything that happened, PD101 was a good show and i kinda missed this kind of survival show because i really liked the way Produce 101 worked though the seasons

Next year Boys Planet will air and I'm still thinking if I should watch it. Sometimes I feel that my disbandment trauma would'nt let me enjoy the show and the future group. But I really want to try and watch it, and maybe even find a new group to stan and follow

    Any thoughts?

  • Hey man, woman, or human. Based on what you said, I think the right thing to do is NOT take these show seriously and also DO NOT make KPOP your identity or lifestyle. Kpop is entertainment, it is to entertain you, and that's all it should do.

If you invest so much into it that it is affecting your daily life, I suggest you really do rethink it. It is OK if it happened before, but now you know and so make the changes. The day you look at KPOP as a job is the day your enjoyment truly ends. I am a bit older and followed KPOP since 2005ish? I have seen plenty of groups come and go, plenty of fanwars and how invested fans are. You want your idols to do well and you take great pride to have your idol win awards, I get it. It's awesome seeing fans chant, rallied behind their idols, and make their idol known to the public, all that is great, HOWEVER, the idols' job is to perform and that performance should be treated as entertainment.

Kpop is such a saturated industry that you'll get tons and tons of new groups yearly, if you spent all time stanning, following, and felt hurt by every single group you have come across with, then what is left? It is so tiresome. You DO NOT have to stan every group or any group for that matter. Just enjoy what is given, cheer them on, listen to songs without the stress of that there is an invisible deadline. Because KPOP will continues to live on, survival shows brings in $$$, and new groups will be debuted.

So I say, enjoy it while you can. Don't take it seriously. Treat it as entertainment. Don't make it a job or a lifestyle. Goodluck~ :finger-heart:

  • No. I stopped watching those shows when I learnt about the rigging for sexual services and bribes that MNet PD's did. I dislike MNet for continuing those new survival shows so soon after that scandal. Means they haven't learnt anything and got away with it.

Fine for them, but I don't need to support them for it.

  • I would only watch if voting was based on talent

  • I still casually follow those shows, but I don't think Mnet will ever replicate the success and talents of the first 2 seasons. GP999 fell way short and the group that comes out just don't have the star power and brand power of the Produce series before, especially since he public has already lost interest in them. Kepler is just not the same with IOI and not even Iz*One.
