Does this mean we can't judge singing either because we have lack of knowledge when it comes to language idioms, culture etc? When people judge vocals they judge how it sounds and the same goes for rap.

Exactly. Based on our own knowledge + preferences, we (people outside the culture) make a decision on whether we like it or not based on its sounds.

Regardless if whatever was sung/rapped, it can be deemed great or lacking. Even if it was "fraggle knackle boo boo", if the rhythum/tone/energy/delivery they did it with was wonderful to us, they won us over. + THATS OKAY. we can say "i like/dislike how this sounds because [insert reason].".

Lyrics tho, unded any context of language, has so many layers to it. The fact that most of us cant even form a true opinion about that aspect of kpop music unless we are handed a translation or is told what its about + that still wouldnt fully convey or hit home unless we grew in or deeply knew of the culture.

rap-wise (from my perspective), i have certain knowledge + views with hip hop around the world verus its approach + usage within kpop music over the years. before I got into kpop, there was a certain standard or view i had for anyone considered to be a rapper/lyricist/mc + lyrics (whether written by themselves or with assistance) are directly tied into that view.

coming into kpop, i had to learn (+ still learning) to suspend that view because the culture sees rappers in a wider scope + their standards are different. plus the way that certain messages, pictures, + analogies are present, i could never make my own full opinion about lyrics without the use of someone that knows (or at the least, giving whatever idea they know of, regardless if its correct or their own concocted far fetched thought) . So theres no way i or anyone outside of the culture can be a judge of THAT aspect of the artform, meaning we slick most times are halfway appreciating it for what it is.

long story short, many of us (me included) can be real surface level about music, which is okay. its made to make us feel good. however, things make a turn when we put too much value into these surface level feels + then we judge + start arguments + mayhem over nothing that really had any real tangible value to begin with other than single genuine good feels. its like we cant respect things for what it truly is. we can love it to death, but theres no need to fight anyone over it.

sorry this is so long. lawd. lolol hope your day is going well!

Never trust people who claim to be able to judge rap in a language they don’t know. You know it’s all cap. :cryingr:

this. lack of knowledge about the language, idioms, + culture, many of us cant + shouldnt place ourselves in a position to FULLY decide that him or anyone is great or void of talent as a rapper.

yes, there are things we can recognize that is pleasing to the ear (mostly, a personal like or something that we are familiar with) + there are certain standards within the artform (depending on what lens the artform is viewed under), but even this has to be taken with a grain of salt.

We are often just not self-aware enough to realize it.

THIS THO. this is what i wanna see from more fans. shoot, i need to see it from myself more honestly.

...this is a lot to process. Whoa.

    • Main Dancer - current strongest talent to offer the group. Helping others with choreography + staging.
    • Sub Vocalist - give me 2-5 lines or some humming + background harmony parts while i start deep training my vocal skills. I wanna pull a Taemin on yall. give me 2-3 years + let me work so i can advance to a Lead/Main Vocal level. Lolol
    • Face [International] - English speaker, American. Probably be one of the most social ones in the group doing livestreams + connecting with other international idols as well as being a translator for my Korean members + friends.
    • Madnae [Fake Maknae] - 4 out of 5 chances that I'll be the oldest member, yet the one that looks + acts the youngest.

one of the things that still draws me to kpop is how some boy/girl groups or solo kpop artists incorporate r+b elements into some of their songs or adopt it as a part of their vocal styling. being an r+b fan since near birth, there's a joy i feel to hear how creative these producers + vocalists can be with their own interpretation of the genre while blending it with other influences + ideas.

whether it leans into a traditional sound or warps it with futuristic beats + twists, its nice to see + amazing to hear when its done great.

posts following below will be some kpop songs I've come across from popular kpop groups. if theres any you like as well, go head + share it!

also, there are artists that consider themselves Korean R&B artists versus a K-Pop artist. this thread isn't particularly focused on them; HOWEVER, there's another thread dedicated to discovering + sharing K-R&B. if you like some of these songs, please check it out!: mihn's spot |AKP's Official K-R&B thread
