What is the real reason for SM groups not particularly popular outside Asia?

Only BTS and BP are mainstream "popular" outside the kpop niche, and even they are less so than an Adele.

Within the kpop niche, there are many strong performers who can sell out arenas and gain large album sales, including SM artists. Several groups sell out concerts in North and South America and Europe and have strong album sales called out in local press in other countries. SM artists are regularly in the top most streamed Kpop artists in the US and the top most tweeted in the U.S. so clearly they have a loyal fanbase in the West (EXO, RV and NCT).
