What is the real reason for SM groups not particularly popular outside Asia?

    Approved the thread.
  • almost all idols are mostly popular in asia only. the west mostly cares about bts (and a tiny bit about blackpink) when it comes to kpop.

  • SM tends to promote their groups to western audiences the least I think.

Sm sound isn’t the most public friendly

Even in Asia besides Korea and china sm lacks behind especially in sea

  • kinda surprised despite them pushing so much in US as example

  • skz and itzy making the same/similar music but they are more popular than nct and aespa respectively.

Do they? I know y'all call it noise music but Itzy and SKZ's songs are more palatable to the i-GP, not to mention they also have those relatable, down-to-earth vibes that the Westerners are more drawn to.

Skz and itzy don't make similar music to nct and aespa. Just bcz y'all leveled it as "noise" doesnt mean they're all same/similar. Each of these groups have their own color and vibes in their music. Listen all of these groups' whole discography please before making this statement.

  • They just feel too tryhard and manufactured. Besides the kpop niche is being filled by bts & bp and they almost have monopoly of bg and gg markets in the west

  • EXO, Red Velvet and Aespa have been doing pretty well actually internationally, considering youtube/Spotify/international recognition and considering the fact that Aespa's only 1.5 yrs old.

  • the SM obsession for that holy grail high note is genuinely annoying to some.

  • can y'all drop the whole "every (big3) kpop groups/acts, except for sm's, are popular in the west"

literally only bts (and to a lesser extend bp) is popular in the west outside of the kpop sfere & in the kpop community almost all acts are being treated the same. stop this false narrative?

literally no one, except for kpop fans, cares about kpop groups in the west.

  • How many threads on this? Sm music ain't it. Also can we stop acting like except bp, bts and twice other groups are popular? They aren't.

Why are you trying to sneak TWICE into this?

Internationally and certainly in the West it's just BTS that are wellknown and popular with the general public = everyone that ain't a hardcore kpop fan. Then, after a huge gap follows Blackpink that are a tiny bit known to some regular people.

And then, after an even longer distance follows the mass of other kpop groups that thank their 'international popularity' solely, above all, to the niche of kpop fans =/= general public =/= common people

  • blackpink doesn't have those relatable, down to earth vibes but they are currently the most popular gg in the west

They are relatable in spite of their high-end brand endorsements and image as they seem to be closer to what Westerners see as the cool girls you'll see in high school. When they were guests at JYP's party people, everyone thought they were an international girl group. It also helps that they might seem badasses on stage but outside of it are adorable normal human beings with hobbies, quirks, etc.

You've also forgotten Jennie and Rose lived abroad. They carried that culture from there. They instinctively know how to deal with foreigners. Lisa to a lesser extent, too, being from Thailand yet exposed to the South Korean culture. Jisoo may seem the odd one of the bunch but she acts and moves like a typical millennial.

It's the way they move, basically. They just have IT. Now, I don't follow BTS but they're also very charismatic, funny, and seemed like the popular guys you want to be friends with.

  • Their music plain and simple. Those weird out of place, out of nowhere bridges aren't it. They add unnecessary high notes anywhere they can fit them like they're about to go out of fashion.

Most of their music is not suitable for general consumption and is more suited to niche spaces.

  • Anyone who thinks that songs like Growl, Ko Ko Bop, Boss, Psycho, Bad Boy, INVU, Four Seasons, Weekend, etc etc are unfit for a western public, need to have their head examined, for real.

but sm never tried to promote these songs to the west, instead they picked the most cringe/weirdest songs like jopping???

not to mention their groups rarely ever sing live and look lifeless on stage.
