Three Greatest Singers in the HIstory of Korean Pop

  • One could cite a lot of names, but after everything is said and done, if I have to choose three greatest singers in the history of Korean Pop, these three acts will have to be cited.

They are listed in order of their debuts.

    1. Cho Yongpil, who was playing guitar for the American troops in the 1960s (formal debut date 1969 but probably earlier - no one kept records in Korea back then)

Whether you like him or not, he dominated 1980s Korean Pop, and basically he put Korean Pop into what we can call as modern age.

Seo Taiji also contributed but his influence appears to be dimming as he has entered the secretive mode.

Cho Yongpil, who could do rock, enka and ballads, basically brought Korean pop to the modern age and no one could beat him for 6 years and only in 1987, the 7th year of his dominance, challenges began to arise.

He nevertheless continued to be influential, and as late as 2013 he returned and once again captivated Korea, and managed to secure an interview with Minho of Shinee and a Japanese duet with Taekyeon of 2PM.

    2. IU, debuting 2008

This choice would be quite surprising, but she surpassed Cho Yongpil's longevity record in 2022.

In the history of Korean Pop, she has remained influential the longest, from 2010 to 2022 (with some hiatus in between, but), and 13 years is fairly a long time for a singer to remain influential even in Western Pop.

While she mostly stayed in Korea and her presence outside of it is minimal, at her 15th year she is the last remaining opposition against BTS remaining on earth, and her extraordinary longevity and staying power is unprecedented in the history of Korean Pop, so she is one of the three greatest singers of the history of Korean Pop.

    3. Bangtan Boys (BTS), debuting 2013

Two words are enough for them: World Domination.

  • I read singers and I thought It was about singing skills :pepe-life-support:

  • IU doesn't belong in the same list as cho yongpil and bts. Psy and seo taiji should be here. Iu is on the same level as boa and big bang. Not above them.

  • When i read the title i thought its about the best vocalists.

  • Did you have to write all of those for the first 2 and then 1 sentence for BTS lol. You hyped it all up just so you can write that 1 sentence?

also thought you going to list vocalist lmao

  • Cho Yongpil is huge among the elder population and for nostalgia, but the competition back than was not even 1/100 of what it is today. He started to lose relevance quickly when Seo Taiji took entered the scene and "retired" because he no longer did as well as he did in the 80s.

For impact on korean society none is bigger than Seo Taiji.

IU doesn't belong in the same list as cho yongpil and bts. Psy and seo taiji should be here. Iu is on the same level as boa and big bang. Not above them.

If the context is korea only IU is the most accomplished artist of all time. None has more hits or has dominated as long as her, and all of it before she even turned 30. BoA, Psy are big of course but are not even in the same ballpark as those two in korea. For the 2000s, IU and Bigbang stands at the top.

  • honestly I agree with this list. Seo Taiji burned brightly but extinguished himself too fast. BoA also only maintained her star power for 5 years. Psy is a few hits wonder. If we're talking lasting impact and continued musical influence, it's these 3. Big Bang is an honorable mention, I could be okay swapping IU with them though their legacy has become a bit tainted in recent years, and it doesn't look like they plan to stay long in the music space.

  • That last sentence made me laugh out loud.

So you don't mean literal singers, but popular stars. OK fine...
