I`m just curious, but why are there no coed units?

It's due to them being Idols where a huge majority debut under the age of 19 which by birthdate means you are no longer a Minor in South Korea. So it would be uncomfortable to debut Minors in a Mixed group, well unless they were siblings like Akdong Musicians

Mixed Collaborations are fine for a special occasion but anything permanent would face the ire of fans

Is SM the only big company that's played with co-ed project groups?

Even one of the other co-ed groups I can think of was signed to a subsidiary of SM.
