My experience ,thoughts and questions as a kdrama novice

  • I haven't really watched a lot of kdramas due to time constraints but the ones that I did watch ,I really enjoy. I've watched Goblin, Reply 1988 ,While you were sleeping, It's OK that's love and now I'm watching "Something in the rain".Now I'm not one of those people that are riding the Korean hype train, the only reason I'm watching kdramas are to learn more about film, at the moment I am enjoying them but I do have some problems.I dont know what's the standard for dramas in Korea so I have more of a "western" viewpoint and that's where I think I'm going wrong. Here's some things that I wanted Ti point out , what do you think about them.(I could be wrong so plz be gentle)

    1. Some dramas don't hook the viewer straight at episode one.I understand that this is a difficult thing to do, but even on episode 2 the story is not properly set up.I like Goblin cuz right in episode we get Kim Shin's backstory and his motivation going into the future and how it ties into other characters https://speedtest.vet/ https://showbox.tools/.
    2. Maybe it's just me but some dramas are hard to finish. Reply 1988 thought good , took me time to finish.(the fack that's the 80s nostalgia had no effect on me since I wasn't around at that time probably didn't help)
    3. I can't understand the Korean defenition of "melodrama".Movie and shows within the melodrama genre feel different when I watch Korean compared to Western.
    4. I need someone to explain and guide me through the "00s" era dramas example autmn in my heart, winter sonata, stairway to heaven, full house. I'm kinda lost and don't know what to watch and how to judge as they seen completely different from modern dramas .I want to know what this era was all about, the common tropes, the actors during this time etc
    5. what is up with the ratings on IMDb, I see a lot of dramas with 8s and near 8s. I find I hard to believe that so many can have such high ratings. Extra -can someone make me like a list of the most cliched dramas and most unconventional dramas, so I can understand this amazing genre better.

  • kdramas are overrated af because people watching them are mostly fantasizing the looks and the romance

that should answer most of your questions

btw if you want something that will really move you to the core, you can try My Ahjussi

and yes older dramas were really shit

  • Ratings are often inflated because there are a subsection of fans who think dramas are better because they're not western. (Honestly all "foreign" media has this problem in the US. I've seen people hype up terrible British dramas just because they're British.)

I don't really care for the over the top melodramas. It's just too much for me and I get bored. I tend to stick to romantic comedies because that genre is one of my favorites, but it's all but dead in the US.
