I can't tell if your joking or very serious about this.
Why are horror movies where people are killed/tortured allowed, but if someone sings controversial lyrics everything is wrong?

I know and that's not what I meant....I meant if it is from rapist point of view and at the same time it implies or directly says that this kind of behaviour is okay or it romaticise this kind of behaviour
I will edit my previous comment so it's clear

Context matters.
The line between depiction and glorification matters.
Best reply and also the most concise.

it's all entertainment. nobody is supposed to take entertainment seriously. some idol singing about being in love or some rapper rapping about the doing drugs and having a lot of "hos" is just meant for diversion. whether it's true or not, it's none of anyone else's business
I don't mind if someone sings about having many hoes lol,if it influences people to get many hoes too it wouldn't matter.
If an idol sings about sexual abuse in a way they romanticize it I don't think it's okay. It reminds me of those wattpad stories of girls falling in love with their kidnappers/abusers. Those influenced so many people into believing the mafia is something to adore, something good where you'll find your true love that will protect you from the world. It's terrifying how many young girls go "I wish I am kidnapped by mafia boss" and actually being serious with it. It's similar with idols too.
Not to mention,if the idol wrote the lyrics themselves it means they either relate to them somehow or support it. It's hard to write lyrics for something you don't support, hate or are against. If I, for example, write a song where the lyrics judge, shame and blame sexual abusers it would justify my hate towards them. If I write a song glorifying them and romanticizing them then it means I don't really have anything against them? Why would I purposely write a song where I put on a high pedestal something and worship it if in reality I hate it?

if a guy sings to me and u that he makes a woman in a minute or r4pes her, do you call it art? for me it is simply smuggling his sick fantasies under a fake "ART" badge and making life difficult for people. no, that's not normal. movie can hit you with the situations, pain and transitions of the characters. you feel their emotions. in the case of music, the most important role is instrumental and direct connection to the listener, preferably something that you can understand and identify with. the artist expresses emotions and feelings also by painting, which is unclear to a potential person, because in art you see what you want to see. art is not everything, art has never been everything. art has rules that people have been trying to hide for many years and pretend that they never existed. art focuses on individuality and the search for something that is invisible to the naked eye. I don't understand what your point is. and is horror an art? I mean-
OK, being honest I wouldn't call that art cuz the topic of rape makes me feel uncomfortable, I think that if the lyrics are written in 1st person with a lot of personal details is showing a criminal who is expressing his/her damaging desires. Not gonna defend that...
But if the lyrics take the topic of rape with the perspective of a "movie" like narrating a story and getting into the characters then ... Idk. I think the intention is most important, some people are creative/eccentric and write about controversial stuff and some other are just expressing their damaging desires which can hurt society.
It's a hard topic cuz there are certain lines that separate ill-intentions from someone who is being more focused on a movie/book related product.
There are plenty of songs where the villain of a movie is glorified and no-one says a thing., But I guess in here enters the subjective likes and our inner boundaries towards certain topics.
A villain who has a lot of money and talks about his superiority complex might get a pass and people might sing along , but a villain as someone who rapes or a terrorist or a paedophile will get a no... And here it shows that it's a complicated topic.
I feel comfortable singing to a song from the perspective of Freddy Krueger's who wants to get into the dreams of people and destroy people's lives, but I don't do that in real life...
Now singing a song about someone who rapes, i wouldn't do that cuz it doesn't make me feel comfortable.

so basically you think your level of sensitivity is more valid than those of others. there's people who feel women shouldn't be described as objects at all in music. there's others who don't care either way. as an artist, whether an idol or rapper, they should have freedom of creative expression. and society should have the responsibility of educating children that this is just entertainment. nothing in entertainment is supposed to be taken literally.

Mmm, i believe the Simpson make an episode about this subject.

😐
I thought you said hoes as in..Your way to express those songs where people sing about having men/women wrapped around their fingers,if you get me. If you meant objectifying women you should have said it that way since I still haven't developed the ability to read minds

Actually yes... This is the best answer.

I think controversial content is not a big deal as long as the product is quite niche and underground, which these kinds of content usually are for obvious reasons. It only becomes an issue when it's included in a mainstream product and/or comes to the awareness of the general public. Take for an example the movie Cuties which became a hot topic in the USA because it got added to Netflix (with a piss poor cover pic) even though it was merely a arthouse French film they would never heard of and never cared about in usual circumstances.
I really liked your answer!

goddamn. This is such an interesting thread to read. It's shocking to see a lot of articlulate people with a good head on their shoulders...

I was always curious about this...the romanticisation of abuse is so rampant that sometimes it feels like a fulfilling healthy relationship lacks the same idk spark/drama.
I wonder if its been studied like is it the allure of danger or a bad environment growing up that leads to its normalization/ romanticisation especially when it comes to topics like cheating/crime...both are treated like a rite of passage that makes a relationship stronger when in reality they should run the other wayyy

Actually, I wrote this post just being myself, being honest.
Anyway... I can see why some people might got the wrong idea. I sounded too open-minded, maybe?
It's a complex topic and what can be sensitive for some people might no be for others.
I guess the way the product is presented matters, if it's more related to a science fiction/movie-like/ Poetic side it can get a pass , but if it's more related to reality/facts things get more difficult. But it also depends on the topic and the context and other details.
