Name recognition or Song recognition

I guess both could be true.

Though for BTS, I feel like lots of people would at least be able to recognize Dynamite and Butter, so I'm not sure if I totally buy into not recognizing their songs.

In my country, literally EVERY teenager knows BTS. Not a single person knows Gangnam Style or talks about it even after Kpop becoming so much common here now. They simply don't remember it, i.e, it wasn't as impactful people paint it to be.

Just from my group of friends who are in 22/23, they vaguely know who BTS are, but couldn’t name or hum a song (i say this considering we all watched their new years performance together. They’d know they are kpop tho). But Butter was playing at a amusement park at the end of the Fireworks show, and my friend said he had never heard the song or knew it was BTS (he mainly listens to his spotify playlist).

They definitely know Psy and Gangnam Style. We actually played a trivia game last weekend and it had a question with Psy and had to name the song.

So yeah, atleast for my friends, Psy is more well-known than BTS. Maybe due to PSY being an actual phenomenon where his song/dance was everywhere, while BTS have had a somewhat normal rise to fame (with building a fandom versus going viral)

Teenagers today were like 6 when Gangnam Style was released. Clearly they wouldn't remember.

I assure you people who were already teens didn't know GS either. It didn't have any impact here. Kpop, as a whole, even after globalisation is niche here.

Of course it would be a different story in let's say Indonesia or Malaysia, Kpop has always been big in these countries.

GS Style I guess???
