I think part of it is that they also have very consistent comebacks so it's like you're gonna feel extremely "hungry" for them at an moment in time, and so then people feel less pressured to buy

Multiple CBs surely set them up better for bigger sales right? Have a CB, find success, build hype for next CB, repeat.

It obviously works since you often see groups sell more each successive CB including Twice

why the hell does this matter

does it really matter? they've sold plenty and continue to sell plenty

clearly JYP decided they'd prefer Twice to consistently sell 2-3 albums of 500k a year (and that's not including Japanese releases which are usually twice as expensive ), then to have lots of hype for the one album that then sells 1.3 million every 1.5 years. Long-term it's definitely worked out for them as they're the best-selling girl group ever and did tons of stadium tours in Japan (and even an arena tour in the US), before corona hit. Not to mention the "little things" like hi-touch events, CFs, and so on that I'm sure raked in loads of money as well.

If their Japan fanbase wasn’t declining they would probably break their steak of 400k and 500k selling albums.
