Then you calculate the area to get square meters.

Exactty ^^^ JiminieKookie you shouldn't directly convert from feet to square meters because they are not equivalent units. Convert to meters directly and then multiply them to get square meters and a gauge of the area.

Garages are generally a square or a rectangle shape, so you would just need to measure the length and the width. The most common garages here fit about two cars if there isn't any storage along the walls.
