NiziU isn‘t K-Pop

  • Why do people consider their music K-Pop? Just because they are a part of JYP. That would be the same as if we call Justin Bieber K-Pop because he belongs to Hype. NiziU is obviously for the Japanese market and it might show how similar J-Pop and K-Pop is these days but it still doesn’t make NiziU a K-Pop band.

  • Well who said that…everybody and their mom know Niziu is JPOP but of course some will consider its Kpop cuz JYPE the one who produce the group. Did Hybe produce Justin Beiber??? Get ur Logic straight first.

  • Because they're a mix, Japan considers them KPOP/Domestic girl group, they DONT consider them jpop

What gets called "KPOP" is more accurately describes Korean Idol Music, which comes from just that, an idol system/industry based out of Korea. Which is much different then the Japan Idol system(JPOP)

NiziU comes from the K Idol system, they're music/choreo/management/MVs/marketing all mimic KPOP.

Where they different from KPOP, is they hold closer to traditional JPOP releases. Meaning CF songs as official songs, 1A1B single releases, and single albums.

As for the girls themselves, they are managed as Division 1 in JYPE, live/train/shoot MVs in Korea. There staff are all Korean.

  • But J-Pop is getting closer to K-Pop. If you take E-girls or Faky, they are similar to NiziU.

I agree with the rest though.

  • the true question is:

is language the sole criteria for determining "X-pop"

when a group lets say twice sings in japanese (Perfect World) does that suddenly make it J-Pop?

what about a korean version of a japanese song like BDZ - does that make it then K-pop?

what about something like blackpink who sings is all English - is that suddenly western pop?

now what about someone like Yuqi (Chinese) singing B&C in English whilst being a kpop idol?????

  • You are 100% WRONG. Billboard, Oricon, and RIAJ all place them in their charts as Japanese Domestic group. They are not considered a Korean group hence not KPOP.

  • koreans don't consider them kpop either maybe they are their own genre but definitely aren't kpop

    • Official Post

K-Pop is such a generic and broad term that it leads to people having their own interpretation of it so that's how you end up with these kind of statements.

Some think it's just music in Korean for the Korean market, but what about a group's Japanese discography?

Some think it's any music by a group from Korean group, but what about groups from other countries that sing in Korean?

Some think it's a group that's born from a Korean music company, which is honestly my own take mostly. You may not be fully K-Pop, but you're a cousin.

NiziU isn't kpop to me, but they are kpop adjacent as they have the backing of a Korean company and are marketed using tools taken from the kpop industry. Plus they have the added bonus of having their comebacks uploaded on the main JYP channel (and even from having the JYP Official branding on their own channel) which gets them bonus promotion and ties to their cousin groups.

  • Don't they sing in Korean ?

Nope. They did one cover of their songs in a performance youtube video version of their japanese song but they have no releases in Korean. You can't buy any of their CDs, download their songs, or stream their songs on any Korean specific outlet like Melon, Bugs or such.
