the letter 'u' - to my knowledge - was a relatively new addition to the english language
the letter 'v' used to hold the name of U but then smth happened later that caused the introduction of 'u'
and so when 'w' was created, 'u' didn't exist yet, so it used to be just fine.

so apparently V and U in the roman alphabet was the same letter.

and that's apparently called "Gu" according to google.
