[theqoo] ALLDAY PROJECT ANNIE'S DAYOFF UPDATE

"Day Ones, you were really surprised, right? I should’ve told you first, but I didn’t expect an article to come out so suddenly ㅠㅠ

I’ll start by explaining the things you’re probably most curious about, one by one…

I was told early last year that I couldn’t extend my leave of absence any longer, so at that time I discussed it in advance with the members and the company and made the decision. And I only have one semester left! I worked really hard before and earned a lot of credits, so if I attend just one more semester, I’ll graduate. Until early May, so about three and a half months… you’ll wait for me, right?

In the meantime, I’ll attend school diligently, work a lot on music in the US, and I’ll have days off often too, so please don’t worry too much :)

And actually… even if I leave on weekends, because of schedules I’ll have to come back to Korea almost once or twice a month anyway ㅎㅎ

I’m really sorry I couldn’t tell you first, Day Ones. But when I graduate, you’ll be proud of me, right?

I’m really going to miss you a lot."

    1. No but she has such a godlike mindset, she's even good with words

    2. I don't understand how people can hate on her for this

    3. Her words are seriously so pretty

    4. She lives such a hardworking life

    5. Do you think she shouldn't care about final semesters just because she's a golden spoon? I don't understand the hate

    6. That's her last semester, how can people expect her to ditch it? I'm obviously supporting her

    7. She has to graduate and her words are so pretty. I don't understand the hate

    8. She's taking care of the fans, so I'm not worried about her hiatus ㅋㅋ

    9. Annie fighting

    10. She only has a semester left, of course she needs to graduate

  • It's great that TBL is allowing her to finish her education. Hopefully more companies allow idols to pursue an education because you never know what could happen to an idol's career.

whilst that might be true and hopeful

the reality of it is Annie's unique since she's cash up

the average and even above average kpop idol doesn't have such luxury

I've always said that the most important benefit in being rich is to be able to FAIL and FAIL again and again and again...

wanna get into animation - great, wanna change and do ballet - sure, try a stint as a kpop idol - yeap - the average person (and kpop idol) cannot afford such risk and opportunity costs

call me a cynic but you cannot tell me that Starship or SME will be willing to let WY or Karina go off and study for like 6months+ (unless there is some kind of reciprocal quid pro quo...)

i don't know about 6+ months but surely they would allow 3.5 months, that's really not that long. TBL likes to give their artists hiatuses way longer than that. annie also already clarified that she will be returning to korea, doing some schedules and working on music during this time. it's really not that big of a deal

but the issue is she is officially going on hiatus from ADP activities but not solo ones?

the question is then what group activities were planned from now till end of May ?

    OR

does the entire group effectively go on hiatus during this period because of Annie?

    OR

was the group already planning on going on hiatus until end of May and thus Annie took the opportunity to study?

so it would also seem that in regards to the bolded part that she will continue solo activities?

again speaking generally and not ADP specific - how would that be fair to the other members? like Annie gets a "pass" from group activities to undertake an education whilst the other members have to continue be active ADP members?

that Annie gets to continue to undertake solo activities which are obviously more profitable and increases her own brand awareness whilst doing something that she benefits from - an education

(again I do not know behind the scenes and if the members have approved this or the company approved this or it was forced on them)

I'm not having a go at Annie specifically but rather that this is a novel situation in kpop and I've never seen it before

  • the group is taking a break to prepare for their next album. it was said that annie will be working on songs as well as studying during this time. she doesn't have a solo music career so i assume she will be working on the adp songs. she is not "officially going on break from adp activities".

maybe i'm not cynical enough but i assume most companies would allow any idol 3.5 months to finish a university course they spent a lot of time and effort on. there's already several idols going on mental health breaks for 6 months+ so i don't see why this wouldn't be considered an equally valid reason.

  • if Annie is continuing with her scheduled activities whilst attending Columbia then it's all hunky dory I guess

the original statement seemed like she was going on a hiatus...

really? unless one is from the big 4 or have some kind of massive leverage why would any company even allow an idol do commence higher education in the first place during the period of their kpop contract - let alone allowing them to complete something that is usually not beneficially to the company?

also let's not forget that ADP are rookies - I don't think there's been any other company or group in the entire history of kpop that has allowed a rookie idol to take time off to start or complete their higher education (not talking about high school)

mental health breaks are given because otherwise companies are seen in a bad light if something happens to said idol and if an idol is sick it affects their bottom line
