SME really don't know how to promote soloists! Min Jiwoon is a great R&B singer and sold 85 albums in a WEEK!

  • Okay, technically she's not backed by SME, because KRUCIALIZE is a new agency under SME, but still, they should give them a more money, because this is insane!

Anyway, if you love good singers and R&B, follow this girl, because she's amazing, and honestly, I think she should do a collab with Wheein, because their voice would fit perfectly!

  • I forgot about her. I remember she had a MV last year and it sounded good. I think it's most likely the issue of a k r&b artist signing with SME because they're more focused on idol music. It would be cool if big companies put more attention to k r&b because a lot of good music from that scene but not much attention it seems.

R&B is not the most popular genre in Korea, sadly. It's basically like underground Hip Hop.

The mainstream genres in SK changes in every 5-10 years, sometimes the most loved is EDM, Ballad or the basic Pop music, but the other genres were never mainstream on Charts. I mean, except if some high profile soloists or group releases a song in that genre. Like Day6 with band music (rock) or IU, GD, Taeyeon and some other groups that does R&B.

To be fair, it's not just Korea, indie musicians are the same everywhere.

There are some that breakthrough but overall it's tough for those artist. I think it shows how impressive Bibi career is to breakthrough in that market and same with Heize at one point. I really like their music, but it's hard to get attention but at least they get booked.

Bibi became more popular because of her acting career, and I don't think Heize is that popular, but her popularity relies heavily on her OSTs.

This is the way for lesser known singers. OSTs, acting or both. Sadly, not many of them can do this for several reasons.

I fully disagree about your Heize assessment . Her popularity didn't rely on OSTs and she was performing well in the 2010s with her music outside of OSTs. She had many songs chart in the top 10 and even had multiple #1s. I think her popularity diminished from what it was when she released vinglevingle. I think you won't see high amount of physical sales but I assume she's very popular digitally like most k r&b/hip hop artists. She won't regain her popularity, but she was popular for around 7 years in Korea and that's an impressive feat for a soloist. Plus, she still gets booked, so she's indeed popular. Sorry I'm a bit of Heize fan

With Bibi she was popular before she got into acting. Her popularity was with both Korea and international audiences. I think being partnered with 88rising helped her gain fan support internationally and that was before she got into acting. I do think domestically her strides in acting helped her reach new level of fame there. So, i agree with your point there

I wonder if there's a collapse in the k r&b an and k hip hop scene. It seems most artists aren't doing as well as they used to do in the 2010s. Feels Min Jiwoon should be much more popular than she is because I feel this muisc would be much more popular a couple of years ago. Which makes me wonder if there's a collapse.

At its prime it was THE genre of Korean music for 20-something Koreans to listen to, especially Crush and Heize.

It does seem like K-hip hop and K-R’n’B are in decline. When was the last time a new artist from either genre made it big?

Agreed because most of the artists I can think of are artists from the 2010s. Don't get me wrong they make good music but a lot of the artist aren't gaining traction like they used to. It's nice seeing an artist like Sumin work within kpop industry and still making quality music. However, I just can't think of a newer artist that is making waves because it seems it's mostly established acts. I assume the market has shifted there where it's most likely people got older and listening habits declined. I guess the younger demographic is into k-rnb and k-hip hop which can explain the decline.

I assume they get to perform at venues in Korea. However, as an international fan, it's much harder these days to be aware of content and feels a bit of a disconnection.

I was talking about nowadays, her early years were good. I'm a fan of her too btw. Not a huge fan like you, but still.😂

Also, when she debuted it was a different time, soloists were loved by more people. Not to mention "Unpretty Rapstar". That show made her really popular.

Like I said, there's a cycle in Korean Music every time. People like different genres every 10 years or so. R&B is not mainstream at this moment, and I don't think there are singers under agencies that doing a good job either.

Jiwoon would've been much more popular between 2010-2015.

  • well if Boa with her popularity barely surpassed such numbers then... no wonder unkown person has such small sales

BoA is in her 25th year, I don't think IU or GD will be as big as they are now in their 25th year, and SM barely did anything for her anyway. Her fandom is not mass streamers, at least 95% of her fandom are older than 30 or 40.

I was planning to buy her album, but I'm broke as hell, and trust me, other fans having the same problem. Especially if they have families. BoA was never a huge physical seller in SK, btw. In 25 years, she sold around 2.3M albums.

  • which show?

I thought she was great in Worst of Evil, and was solid in Gangnam B-Side.

She was decent in Gangnam B-Side, but I dropped the show after EP8, because I had enough. The funny thing is, most Disney shows are not good enough for me for some reason.😅

I watched "Moving" it was okay but slow as hell. Watched "Hyper Knife" for Park Eunbin, it was okay, and I'm still suffering with "Lightshop" and I'm only gonna finish it because of Park Boyoung. Tbf it's not bad, it's just slow like Moving.

Gangnam B-Side starts off well but falls flat near the end. I highly recommend checking out Worst of Evil though.

I liked Hyper Knife, and thought the premise was interesting. I also think the developed the characters well and i feel that's sometimes missing with k-dramas.

I don't mind the Disney k-dramas, but they have somewhat a different feel. I am unsure if its the production but it feels a bit different than other k-dramas.

I think Disney ORIGINALS (not the licensed ones) are usually trying to be more artsy, not sure if this is the right word. More serious than they should. I don't mind slow burn or serious stories, I love it if it's done right, but as you said, after a couple of episodes it falls flat.

Hyper Knife had a huge potential to be like Dexter, and Eunbin were great with the other old guy, but the 2nd part of the season was kinda meh.

I will check out Worst of Evil one day if I finish the ones I'm watching now. 😅

  • Listened to the project today and thought it was solid. I thought she made some quality r&b tracks. A shame sales didn't happen for her, but maybe they should aim more for digital.
