Magic! The Gathering could do a Kpop set?

  • I guess this is kpop news, although I don’t like it one bit so just want to vent lol.

The Hasbro CEO has hinted that future sets of the tradable card game, Magic the Gathering, might be collaborations with kpop artists:

MTG x BTS? Magic: The Gathering wants to do a crossover deck with a K-Pop band and your favorite romantasy books
Is a crossover with BTS or Fourth Wing in the works? Magic: The Gathering fans will have to wait and see.

I love Magic. It’s one of my favourite games and I have dozens of decks for a host of different formats, (from commander to standard, to pauper), the writing was already on the wall for me with the latest Final Fantasy set being released into standard (meaning I could no longer ignore Universes Beyond in any format). They have somehow hit a new low with this…

The only way I might like it, is if they create an original Korean inspired plane with original kpop characters, in a similar way to the Japanese inspired Kamigawa plane (which is actually one of my favourites).

Well, if there are any other magic fans here. I am sure you’ll find this news interesting at least.

If you’re not into magic, here’s a video to explain what I am talking about:

  • Im really into online card games these days (pokemon, marvel snap, hearthstone). I have tried MTG arena but couldnt get into it. If they released a girl group set maybe Id give it another try lol

It can be so complicated and the cards can be so confusingly written until you understand all the jargon, but once you do it has incredibly deep gameplay and the best deck building (especially offline where you’re able to pick from tens of thousands of cards). I first got into it through arena and I remember cards like this just melting my brain:

  • interesting

but wouldn't it be just another cash grab since they are utilizing "cards" to get certain kpop fans into the game

like there re diehard fans who will collect every PC of their favs and this will just drive up sales for collectors who don't really have an interest in MTG per se

It's certainly a cash-grab, as cash-grabs are all Hasbro cares about now, they are milking the game for whatever they can with a constant stream of crossovers (Lord of the Rings first, but now Final Fantasy; with Spiderman , The Last Airbender and maybe Kpop to come) - to hell with people that actually liked Magic's own IP which the game used for 25 years.

They try to separate the collectors vs the players by selling cheaper 'Play Boosters' and expensive 'Collector's Boosters', the later of which come with all sorts of fancy alternate artworks, foils and other treatments. The price of the Final Fantasy collectors boosters went crazy recently, to the point where a lot of "collectors" settle for buying Play Boosters instead (driving up their price too).

  • They're always looking to make a buck, but this is honestly just a bizarre idea, especially since I can't imagine the two target audiences overlapping all that much. At the very least, I feel like Pokemon TCG would be a much more natural fit for Kpop than MtG.

not that bizarre considering Hasbro has already made sets for IP like Miku Hatsune.

I didn't know about this either, but that's really just equally bizarre & disjointed to me. As someone who used to collect Magic cards but stopped a long time ago, I never would have imagined such crossovers. I remember hearing about a LotR one a while back, and that I could actually picture pretty easily, but these? No way.

It's been a slippery slope over the past 5 years (starting with the Walking Dead secret lair, but really accelerating after Lord of the Rings).

They've been eroding their own IP too with something the community calls "hat sets", for example they did a "wacky races" style set recently where all the planeswalkers were driving cars/motorbikes, setting up massive highways and leaving skid marks (in both senses) all over the beloved planes of the past - filled with cheap pop culture references like this

Like I said...ever since Hasbro bought WoTC, they've been churning out collab sets...Clue, Child's Play (Chucky), Spongebob, Monty Python, Ghostbusters...pretty much any IP they can get.
