As someone who has been listening to kpop for a long time, I have to admit that although music and talent are valuable things, they’re not really the main reasons I’ve kept listening for so many years. To be honest, I rarely listen to the old songs I used to love even though I still like them. Instead, I mostly listen to the new songs by new groups that catch my attention. (Of course, there are exceptions like some tracks by f(x), 2NE1, or bigBang.) What has really kept me in kpop for so long is, first, witnessing the journey of a group their rookie days, rise, and sometimes downfall and getting involved with their content. Second, for me, kpop has always been more about aesthetics and performance than just the music itself. I love watching performances, whether it’s on Inkigayo or dance practice videos. And closely tied to those performances, the concepts of the songs also are the third most important factor that keeps me interested. These are the things that keep me into kpop in general. There’s also a separate category, like being an actual fan of a specific group, but that’s not really related to the topic here.
