Will kpop demon hunters revive kpop again?

  • I have not follow this Demon Hunter thing, but listen to some songs from the soundtrack yesteraday, not sure who the arists are seems to be mixed of unknown artists, if they are not AI? But the songs in itself is pretty low quality, even if Golden is not too bad. For the movie itself, sure all attention is probably good, but doubt it will give an huge boost to kpop.

  • I think even with the movie going nuts on Netflix it still didn’t reach non Netflix demographics like it did with Squid Games when everyone and their mamas watched it. I asked so many of my friends about the songs and the movie, they don’t know it.

Also we can make correlation it with how Squid Games made kdramas more popular or not.

IMO Squid Games didn’t increase popularity of kdramas. The reasons I think behind this is, it doesn’t give classic and typical kdrama vibe at all. Also kdrama fans don’t really talk about squid games or include among the best kdrama lists and so an on, so it feels like it is omitted from the core fan base itself. Also I never seen a single person I know who weren’t kdrama fans and watched Sq Games, watch any other kdrama at all. So it is like a stand alone show. I know that here in the US they don’t put kdramas on national TV, but for example in my home country and in many Asian countries they do. I watched a lot kdramas since I was a toddler. So it was already very mainstream since 2000s so it doesn’t really need increase in popularity I think.

Now I think that kpop demon hunters might affect kpop revival a little bit, but I don’t think it will help much. Like I’m not seeing increased interest in groups that were referenced in the movie. Like even the songs that were in it and that weren’t included in the soundtrack didn’t rise on the charts(like Exo song love me right which is sad). Or even Twice new comeback isn’t getting attention compared to the soundtrack which is an indicator that the movie isn’t helping the group or kpop.

Also these groups aren’t permanent and we don’t know when Sony will put out next sequel of the film, so the hype will die down quickly and kpop might not benefit from it much.

So overall I will say no, but I hope I will be wrong!
