"No one would want to read an Asian fantasy"

  • Suddenly thinking about that time I saw an Instagram reel where a fantasy author (I unfortunately couldn't remember her name) was told in 2019 "No one would want to read an Asian fantasy"

Well... that person, who told her that, is so wrong about it.

Like back in 2019, I wanted to read "Wicked Fox" by Kat Cho (even though I still haven't read it...)

But for goodness' sake, there are people who like fantasy kdramas, fantasy cdramas, fantasy animes etc...

Like e.g. someone, who probably loves reading and also really likes that one kdrama "Gu Family Book" mostly would want to read a fantasy book taking place in Joseon dynasty that is a bit similar to that drama.

This thread is a midnight thought.

  • I think people often mix up retellings vs inspired fantasy, too. I work at a library, and oftentimes I see just retellings of Asian myths and they end up not being very well received (for what reason, I don't know).

Fantasy is an interesting genre to me as its readers are pretty split. I find myself not liking the popular fantasy (particularly romantasy). But that is a whole other topic.

  • I literally read manhwa like my life depends on it.

I love Asian fantasy. It might be a niche market in the US, but the success of anime and manga alone should prove this statement wrong.

Some of the manhwa I read is set in ancient Korea, and some of them were adapted from novels. So, yeah, that person doesn't know what they are talking about.
