Former GFriend member Yerin reveals she's been working at an insurance company for two years!

  • Good for her. There's a life after entertainment. And she can release music at her own pace if she wants to going forward.

It should be normalized that you don't need to try hard and get stuck in the celebrity spiral and can just go and do normal work.

  • Surely she isn't doing this because she has to. GFriend definitely payed off their trainee debts and made a good amount of money during their careers

We sadly do not know that for sure, as their cut may not have been large, knowing how contracts are usually written. Then they have to split it 6 ways so it becomes less.

Considering how little Nine Muses, Stellar and others made even at their height around the same time of Gfriend's debut, I would not be too surprised if the Gfriend members also made only small cuts of the profit on their original contract.

I think it all depends how she spent or invested her money :/ A person that comes into a lot of money can still end up poor if they don’t manage it well.

I know some of Snsd members have invested into real estate successfully to have passive income and I’m sure they’re other investments that are not public knowledge

We don't know their contract specifics, but they couldn't have possibly been so predatory or unfavorable, or there is no way GFRIEND considers returning this year under Source Music.

And no offense to Stellar and 9M, but GFRIEND were one of the most popular girl groups in the industry at their peak, and they had a 3 year stretch as a top tier girl group.

GFriend was also very highly requested at music festivals, just like Mamamoo, and Mamamoo was making roughly 21k USD per festival on average.

So basically, considering the above, there is no way Yerin is doing this because she HAS to, unless she squandered a massive amount of her wealth. I'm going to assume she did it because she wanted to.

I did some research and they paid off their debt around 2017. Everything after was pure profit.

yes not everyone works for money some wealthy people work for routine and structure  I guess we will never truly know!

Very true. That's why I'm going to assume she's doing it because she enjoys the work and wants to do it, not because she actually needs the job to pay the bills

  • I was referring to after debt was done, yes, but like I said it depends on how the profit percentages were. As if the group for say had a 80/20 meaning they only get 20% of all their profits, then they must split it 6 ways, even if they were paid 20k+ for each festival, when you split it down to 6 members, it is almost normal 9-5 hourly job salary, and they only play a couple festivals a year. If we add in the album sales, then it gives them a little bit more. But then they would be making maybe 70k a year which is not a lot when most apartments in Korea right now are 3k+ a month, and companies usually choose dorms that cost even more than that.

So unless they had an non standard contract, even when playing festivals etc, if they do not have outside avenues of income, it would be a normal everyday person salary nothing overly lavish.

  • She probably got good money from her GF days, but probably not enough to just retire.

Maybe she bought a house and invested in her music career, selling insurance pays the day to day bills.

I think it's fair to compare them to Mamamoo, a group that debuted in the same generation and paid off their debt in just under 2 years as well. By year 5, all the girls were comfortably wealthy and none of them have to work another day in their lives if they don't want to.

For most of their career overlap, GFRIEND actually had better album sales and their top hits peaked higher, and I think you're confusing giant music festivals with college festivals. The latter is what I'm referring to. Both Mamamoo and GFriend did a TON of them.

Kim Shin young actually told the girls (MMM) to do festivals if they want to make lots of money, when they guested on her radio show, and they listened. MMM did as many as 4 in a day. And I know GFRIEND was the most requested idol group in 2017 (MMM was top in 2016).

tl;dr no way GFRIEND aren't all wealthy enough to live comfortably at this point. At the very least, they couldn't have earned SIGNIFICANTLY less than MMM did during their peak years.
