This piece doesn't pertain to Trump or even the United States but the concept remains the same.

People can still be racist and misogynistic while also interacting, working with, or even LOVING people of color or women. It's cognitive dissonance. People are able to separate, for example, a Latino person they like while still working to oppress Latinos as a whole. "They're one of the good ones", "You're not like them" - these are phrases said to marginalized people by their oppressors when the oppressors approve of their behavior.

People are able to make exceptions in the midst of the oppression they are perpetrating.

  • You mean Jesus Christ had cognitive dissonance when he said "Hate the sin, love the sinner"?

US citizens could very well hate "Illegal immigration" as a dynamic, who are largely Latinos, yet can be friends individually with many Latinos.

That is not dissonance, but nuance and knowing that people are not single dimensional, but have many facets.

Only those incapable of nuance, would call that dissonance.

Or ideologies and individuals, one could despise Islam or Jainism, but can respect individual Muslims/Jains. Not dissonance.

Of course the inability to be nuanced exists on both sides - left & right.

Right fringe will be bigots for they hate individuals in the name of hating ideologies

Left will be bigots by demanding ideologies be loved in the name of loving individuals.

If at all, it is the lack of nuance "with me-all in OR against me" that makes bigots, not left/right, love/hate.

  • Well, I'm an Atheist so... Can't really respond to the Jesus thing since I don't believe he existed to actually say that. And considering the amount of racism this entire world has - I think many (not all) people hate both the sin and the sinners.

And yes, I agree that US citizens could hate illegal immigration and still be nice to Latinos. But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about Trump specifically, not the larger American population. Also, Trump is not just trying to end illegal immigration, he also wants to revoke birthright citizenship, which I am STRONGLY against and I personally believe that the desire to revoke such an amendment is rooted in racism and xenophobia. The reason I was speaking generally in my original post is because I don't think Trump is the ONLY person who follows that kind of mindset, but I was mostly responding about Trump.

People saying they love Latinos - or any other immigrant - yet going out of their way to oppress them is cognitive dissonance. Their words don't match their actions.

I'm not demanding anything and I do understand nuance. I understand why people are uncomfortable with the amount of illegal immigration. I don't think that anyone is a bad person for not being okay with illegal immigration. But at the same time, Trump trying to get rid of laws such as birthright citizenship is a way to oppress groups like Latinos and uproot their lives because of xenophobia.

  • birthright citizenship

Birthright citizenship has been abused a lot that many countries have moved away from that.

To some other restricted mode. Birthright citizenship probably exists only in Americas these days.

I think Trump's attempts will end up in some restricted version of it, like done in many countries of Europe.

Entirely banning it, and applying it retroactively will be a huge challenge to implement.

Idealism is one thing, implementation is another.

  • Yeah, I definitely don't mind restrictions. I just don't think it's a great to go against the 14th amendment right now. I'd prefer it if the border crisis was solved first.

But clearly I'm no expert haha

I think a lot of noise will die down, if they first plug the borders, deport explicitly criminal and stop coddling the undocumented- hotels and stuff, when rest of the world just provides tents/camps.

I am no expert either.. but generally think for all the rhetoric of politicians, they mostly underachieve what they claim.

I am more concerned about the bureaucracy which is a blunt instrument. If Trump sets a target of deporting say 2 million in the first 6th months to meet campaign promises and optics, the officials are more likely to grab random brown skins/Latino looking, to meet the target. That might affect even citizens or legal immigrants.

Yeah, it's just I have some friends who are at risk of being impacted by this situation. They're birthright citizens and I suppose I'm just worried about the worst possible scenario. Which is irrational of me, but I'm just scared for them!

    Understandable.

Hopefully changes to Birthright will only be going forward and not retroactive.

  • He's like a teenage girl in the sense that he's often misunderstood. People may misjudge his actions or words, but deep down, he's just trying to express himself in a way that isn't always recognized or appreciated by others. Watch at any videos of him before 2016, Hollywood and the media ADORED him.

I love that this is what attempts to defend this goon have come to. ^^

"Trump is just a misunderstood teenage girl."

Keep in mind, this is a hardcore Trumper saying this! Not one of his detractors! I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. :huuh:

  • We had Trump for 4 years and all I remember is being cozy working from home, receiving 3 stimulus checks and people all around the world coming together to honor George Floyd. The Biden years has a light dystopian feel to it instead

I'm so glad to hear you were nice & cozy while over a million Americans were busy dying. X/
