  • I can't speak for other western countries, but we don't really have pop groups anymore. When we did, there were "subvocalists" in the sense that they got less lines than everyone else, but this often had more to do with popularity than actual vocal ability. We didn't call them "subvocalists." More like "the other guy."

Bands still have backing vocalists, but their main job is to play their instrument. You don't usually see more than one dedicated vocalist.

  • You could have somebody doing sub-vocals in a band. That's common enough.

But for boybands or girl groups, there's no designated spots. People will know if you can sing or dance, but a member wouldn't be like "hey I'm Harry Styles -- I'm the center."

  • sure. Just unofficial, like with modern Kpop groups. The designated position thing is outdated even here now.

take One Direction, Harry was basically the center, Zayn the visual, Liam the main vocalist, with Harry and Zayn as leads and the other two (sorry) were subvocalists.

even more so, look at Nsync where Justin and JC sang EVERYTHING and the other three were also there. Subvocalists. Although to be fair Justin and JC basically had all the positions, and the other three just made up the numbers.
