Iu - Holssi MV

  • I never got the impression that she is targeting the West. I feel she makes the music she wants and if foreign fans enjoy it, great etc.

I'm confused...is she planning to go for Western markets

What did the song have to do with the mv

I’m not sure other, but she will be touring in the U.S. this summer so maybe she is catering to the West. I think it’s been almost 10 years since she had concerts/tour in the states.

Did you read the lyrics too or just watched the MV? I mean, if you read the lyrics, it's pretty simple.

She never had a tour in the states, btw, this is her first time!

I will do a breakdown for you about the lyrics, it's going to be long, sorry!😅

    [Verse 1]

Where I lay will be somewhere much higher

No, I refuse to take root on a ground too smooth

    Follow my lead

    Make a pretty queue

I will blossom in the sky by all means

    Mm, what a tiny leader

    [Pre-Chorus]

    I’m a recklessly flying

    Single spore, setting out

    On a different road

    Fly high to bloom

If anyone asks how I’m doing

    Send them the news

    “She has become a spore”

    Verse 1 and Pre-Chorus:

Holssi in Korean means dandelion flower seeds. When she released song "23" she said the age of 23 is like a flower, now she's in her 30s, she said there’s no reason or no need for everyone to be a flower, wants to live as a spore fluttering splendidly in the sky it’s really a song about being free, going after your own victory. Lyrics say a lot about not being afraid and not care about what people say. So, she's basically a "TINY LEADER" to everyone, that's why we see her with adults and kids too.

    [Chorus]

Follow me, gonna go to win

Follow me, fly high to the top

You say “hoo” I may fly

You say “hoo” Then I fly

    Follow me, even without wings

Follow me, rise up into the air

You say “hoo” I may fly

You say “hoo” Then I fly

    Chorus:

She asks, mostly, her fans to go and fly with her and win, don't engage with haters. Some people always said something like this about her:

    Fans: "She's IU."

    Mostly haters: "Who?"

So, "hoo" is like when you say "WHO?", but also when you're blowing dandelions, so even if haters trying to blow her away she's going to fly even higher, and the song isn't just about her, it's about everyone else, that's why she's saying, "Follow me, even without wings", meaning you don't have to be famous or rich, because "wings" can mean that she can do it, because she's rich and famous. At least, some people say that, but she came from a poor family too, so you can do it too!

    [Verse 2]

I’ll fly in the center for everyone to see

Watch your sight, better bring your sunglass

    The sky above is blinding

But I’m not afraid of heights at all

I’ll fly so close to the scorching sun

And look down without a care

I’ll pick a cloud to sit on

And might as well cause a ruckus, just for fun

    Verse 2:

This is pretty much self-explanatory, especially after the Chorus.

This line: "And might as well cause a ruckus, just for fun" means, she doesn't care, she's doing this for fun! That's important, because a lot of people say, she's trying too hard to be on charts etc.

    [Pre-Chorus]

    I'm a spore spinning

    Round and round

    Riding the brisk wind

    Fly high to bloom

If anyone asks how I’m doing

    Send them the news

    “She has become a spore”

    Pre-Chorus:

The most significant part, is the last 3 verse. Some people always say, she will flop worldwide, and she's only successful in Korea, especially now that she's doing her first World Tour. So, when she says: "Send them the news. She has become a spore" means, she's above the haters, and she's doing fine!

    [Outro]

The road ahead won’t be easy

But I won’t fuss about it

This was my choice, it always has been

The odds of it being easy are zero

I’ll leave everything I have left to you

    Wish you all good luck

I’ll even bother to say goodbye

    May God be with ya

    See, see ya

    Outro:

This is pretty simple, again, she's not only talking about herself, this another message to everyone. The road isn't easy, never is, but she doesn't care. People keep saying, she's trying too hard, want to be successful worldwide, that's why she's doing so many collabs with mainstream artists, like Suga, V or NewJeans' Hyein.

So, she says, It's her choice, and even if it looks easy for some people, it never is! Then, she wishes good luck to everyone, even the haters, and watching "herself" flying above her "human self", also, letting her go to fly alone, so like she said, she's not afraid at all.

    That's all, basically.

  • ...

As always her lyrics can be interpreted in various ways, but thats probably the gist of it.

I do doubt anything of it has to do with any notion of worldwide success or not. It would be the antis and typical negativity in korea , which kan take some batshit insane proportions in some cases, that it is in part commenting on. (I dont think i have ever seen any korean comments about anything regarding worldwide success or promotions )

For better or worse, IU has little to no clue about anything going on outside of korea regarding herself. She has never promoted directly outside of the country (exception is a few months in japan back in 2012). Her concert overseas has always been because the demand has been there to begin with.

It's more about people outside of Korea, because in Korea there's not many people who dislike IU or hate her. Maybe some new Kpop fans who don't know anything about her, and they don't like the fact that she's more popular and successful than their faves. I read a lot of comments on Twitter, Insta and on some Kpop websites, most of them whining about her first World Tour, saying she will flop, especially in Europe, because I think her concert will be next to Taylor Swift's on the same day or something like that, and people don't know her in Europe. That's another BS, btw.

When she was in my country, Hungary, shooting her movie "DREAM" so many people were there, and my country doesn't have the biggest Kpop fandom. Most of them like her because of her acting career. Also, when she was in Cannes for promoting her other movie, you couldn't even move, because so many people were there, waiting for her. That's why I always said, she doesn't need to promote her in Europe or in the US, she has a huge fandom all around the world. Many of her songs were on Billboard and European charts too, without any PR.

Trust me, she knows everything, you can find the clues in her songs and she mentioned it multiple times in her interviews too. This whole World Tour is happening because of her fans, that's all.
