Vegemite is foul. I don't know how other Australians enjoy it.
It's basically super, super salty. It's meant to be a "yeast" spread and was first made as a by product of beer brewing (and is banned in Aussie prisons), so I guess you could say it has a very slight beery, bready taste.
That is overwhelmed by salt.
Someone also once said it tastes very strongly on how Vitamin B tablets smell?

I have had marmite and I love it, just a lil bit of it on toasted buttery bread adds tonnes of flavour
Don't add dollops of it, just spread very lil of it and its good to go. Its got an umami flavour.

super umami, not sea brine anchovy umami but earthy? i'd compare the strength to licking straight up bouillon powder
i like it as add on to good quality butter (even home churned fresh butter) for any dish that needs salted butter, not only toast. but nowadays i rarely have it at home because it's not very versatile compared to fish sauce and worcestershire sauce
