Are domestic Jpop groups still more popular than Kpop?

  • Honestly to me the promotion/marketing of Kpop idols has always been similar to Jpop idols, especially in the past. It's just that eventually Kpop actively tried to reach out to international audience, which differentiated itself from Jpop.

Also idol boygroups in Japan back then was like 100% Johnny's lol, the grip they had on Japanese showbiz was crazy, none of the big4 company in Korea has the same amount of influence that J&A had/has. They've lost their footing a bit imo with SMAP disbanding, Arashi going on hiatus and the rise of survival show boy groups, but they're still an unshaken force in Jbiz.

  • Yeah, if you look at the charts in Japan, cause this would be stupid to say just cause a foreign artist might sells a lot in Japan would mean that people stop listening to JPop in Japan.

You can also clearly see it on how popular a lot acts still are and even some of the newer artists as like Snow Man, Ado, Yoasobi, BE:FIRST, JO1, ... are pretty sucessfull. YOASOBI are also quit famous outside Japan since they often go viral with their music.

  • If they was not popular they probably would have change concepts and style long ago. It's a bit sad they can't change the concept used by AKB48, Nogizaka46, the "sister" groups and all similiar groups. They more or less kill any chance of a international success with all the "schoolgirl" concepts. It would be nice to see what they could do if they changed a bit a do more groups that are a bit similiar to kpop.
