    tldr it is possible that we occasionally lose out on some big talent, but generally the biggest artists are the good ones.


    I think he does have a point. Yes, it sucks that groups like CLC didn't get anywhere, but you also can't say that group that did hit big were worse than them. In the end most of the so called breakout groups can't even maintain their success, people move on cause they don't find them interesting. You need a perfect combo of music, visuals and personality to hit big.

    I do agree with him somewhat.


    But gatekeepers do still exist, and Spotify is the main one in this new generation.


    Music has always been subjective, so listening to the top 1% of artists, of course, some people don't think that all of them have the talent it takes to make it. To me, the fact that Soundcloud rappers were a thing and some of them made millions during the height of it and some are still going, astounds me.


    As someone who regularly checks out unknown artists on Spotify, there are a lot of talented people out there who actually do make what I consider to be good music. But, the vast majority of them don't lol.


    That's why music 1st and foremost is a game of persistence as well as luck. Most of the biggest artists out there today took YEARS...YEARS to get in front of the right people at the right time, and once they were given the shot and the platform they made it happen for them. Does it mean they were untalented all of the years they didn't make it, no.


    There are also a lot of artists signed to labels who are making music, but they never make it to the top 1%. They were talented enough to get signed and to put out an album and a single, but their career didn't take off. Why is that? Who knows? It's not necessarily because they lacked talent or that the music wasn't good.

    Skill and talent matter very little. There’s been dozens of POC musicians who were better than Elvis, but because he was white, young and his looks appealed to women he was able to get success by taking from what Black people already did.
