Kakao owns Melon the biggest music app in S.K, charting = melon = kakao
Kakao owns Melon the biggest music app in S.K, charting = melon = kakao
so they just decide who is going to hit it big to get people talking about them on kakao ?

it's like if twitter owns spotify ? 😂
Kakao also runs many financial services including payment apps, banking and straight up korean uber
I take example on spotify as melon and twitter as kakao... not melon as twitter,
should not be confused

IU company belongs to kakao ??...I thought she was in a simple agency, that make sense now
so they basically control korean music
no wonder everyone wants to switch to the american market and stop going to melon awards
it's worse than i thought
Kakao acquired IU's agency in 2016, though she moved to a new agency in 2020. Kakao had a minority stake in her new agency EDAM (which IU also owns a 20% stake) but she recently sold part of her stake to Kakao so now it has majority stake.
Before 2016 Kakao wasn't really involved in the Korean music industry.
Kakao has over 150 singers, actors, models, MCs, entertainers, etc under its subsidiary rosters. Names include Jay Park, IU, Suzy, Nam Joohyuk, Choi Wooshik, IVE, StayC, Sam Kim, Weeekly, The Boyz, Victon, etc, the list goes on. People always seem surprised by how many agencies are under Kakao, but they've made a ton of acquisitions in the past 5 years.
I don't really understand the term Kakao privilege. What's the relationship between someone like Choi Wooshik (of Parasite fame) vs Sam Kim vs IU vs The Boyz?
Kakao is like Wechat for China, though if you're not Chinese you still might not understand the scale.
It's like if Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp were all the same app. Kakao touches every single person in South Korea. And it's integrated with your bank account (so you can easily pay via your kakao account), cab services, etc.
It's a multi-billion dollar conglomerate with dozens of different business ventures and revenue streams. For this reason I sincerely doubt Kakao cares about any random kpop group that's deep in its subsidiaries lol.
The truth is that rapidly there will be no more "simple" agencies in South Korea - everyone will be a subsidiary, either by CJ, Kakao, SM, YG, or Hybe (afaik JYP does not have artist subsidiaries).
Tho I'm curious, what do you see that's the relationship between Choi Wooshik vs IU vs Sam Kim vs The Boyz?
