The gist is that fans of a football team called Rostock fired pyrotechnics at fans of Rostock's opponent St. Pauli. Police were present in large numbers, as the game had been deemed high risk, but they ultimately chose not to intervene here and instead focused on keeping rival fan groups apart (which they successfully managed to do prior to the game). One security guard ended up getting hit and needed to be hospitalised.
After the game, representatives of team Pauli stated, that they were appalled by the behaviour shown by these fans of guest team Rostock.
This particular type of fan is called "ultras". They're basically hooligans who claim to differ from the ordinary hooligan in that they're interested in the sport first and the violence second.
Some ultras, like St. Paul's own ultras are also traditionally left wing rather than right wing nationalists, but it's probably better to steer clear of either variation.
