It's amazing that everyone ignores this simple fact when it comes to why so few people are getting married, why people are having less kids, why fertility rates are decreasing, and why people are having less sex. It comes down to preference. In the past being single was related to poverty or death because there were fewer jobs, so in many cases women (and a few men) had to marry for survival. This is why there's a lot birth in very poor countries. Nowadays people can have their own jobs and don't have to depends on others. With freedom of choice there's many things people can do without finding a partner.
What's so difficult about people wanting to be single than settle for anything other than their preference?

First, there's nothing wrong with being single if people want to, and it's okay if people have a partner as well but you're not always going to end up with the person of your dreams. One can be happy or unhappy either way.
