So when the US sales reflect on Circle, that’s the most trustworthy number?

And Hanteo is addition to Circle numbers or is the Hanteo number included in the Circle number?

Also - is it only physicals?

What about the China bars - are they counted in the Circle?

  • Yep circle chart is the #1 most trustworthy chart cause it counts all shipments made from Korea & since every K-pop album is produced in Korea...u get the gist

Hanteo is kinda like target or ktown for example, the 1.55M album sold currently are from hanteo certified shops while the other 650K is not from hanteo certified shops(mostly NA & EU & LATAM & even Japan)

Chinese sales are usually reflected on hanteo cause they buy from hanteo certified shops like ktown

  • From what I understand

Circle is the most accurate for Korean charts because most of their albums originate in Korea so it counts to those shipments.

Hanteo is included in Circle numbers.

I think the main album chart is sales because they also have separate charts just for digital albums.

Chinabars are definitely in Circle. I think most of them use KTown which is Hanteo certified. If they're buying from Chinese stores they are probably only counting in Circle.

  • Circle is basically a shipment chart. It includes all the albums sent all over the world from Korea, but is it an accurate chart? It has at least as many flaws as Hanteo. Because yet unsold albums that are waiting on the shelves or storage of sales shops are also included in this list. Therefore, unfortunately, it is not possible to find out exactly how many albums were sold in both chart.

  • I think Quarkie has summarized everything really well.

I think if you're trying to get a clear view of sales, it helps to look at the Hanteo AND Circle charts. I know there are those who focus on Hanteo only but looking only at Hanteo almost completely eliminates American sales as the largest American retailers, the ones that have special editions of big kpop albums, are not reflected there.

Those 103,000 albums SKZ sold to top the Billboard charts and the 56,000 Twice sold to reach #3 (just the physicals, not counting the streams here to make a point) do not exist in the Hanteo numbers, for instance. And neither did the 215K TXT and 211K NCT 127 sold in 2021, which made them among the top 10 top-selling physical albums in America.

Circle is still Korea's official chart and the industry standard, like Billboard is here in the U.S. It's also the oldest chart, so has longer historical information to draw on as well. It's also worth remembering Circle does adjust the numbers at the end of the year to reflect albums shift back. Despite all the drama, the actual numbers don't move that much, tbh. No one ships back a million albums.

The only thing I didn't see answered was how China measures music. China has several charts of its own and they're not talked about often in the kpop scene. It can also be a bit hard to sort them all out, particularly if you can't read Mandarin. QQ is the one usually referenced, but there is also Kugou, Kuwo and WeSing (they're all owned by the same company, Tencent, although QQ is a joint venture with Spotify). Tencent's brands represent 56% of the Chinese streaming market. I'm not sure on the other charts, tbh...perhaps someone with more knowledge can weigh in. QQ has a lot of charts just on its own!

The Chinese market is oriented much more towards digital album and single purchases vs physicals.

Billboard was previously in China and now is back again and the new chart will allegedly combine all the charts.

This is a great account to follow if you're interested in the Chinese charts (it's in English):

if I remember right, I feel like the biggest adjustment I've seen was X1 as I think they gave people the option to return them after the rigging scandal.
