Do you prefer higher voices or lower voices?

  • well i def prefer female voices to male ones

and the parts i enjoy the most in a song are normally the high notes

i was so obsessed with mariah careys whistle register growing up

but i also enjoy male voices though not the lower ones, i also enjoy hearing males high notes

  • I like lower - that higher pitched vocal is what turned me off of a lot of gg music over the years. I really appreciate girl crush for pulling that pitch down, generally speaking. (High notes, a la Winter, are fine with me - I love 'em, but that's different than a song that's entirely in that higher pitch). This is a big reason I don't care for RV red songs usually.

Textbook example of what I'm talking about:

It happens a lot in choruses especially (Lovesick Girls, Sneakers).

Most bg songs are in that high tenor already. Since kpop is heavily influenced by r&b and that style is what's been the trend since Michael Jackson, that's not surprising. I'm okay with it here but there is a certain strand of even lighter tenor I don't like - it's like a lightweight tenor.

Here are examples of lighter tenors that I like - I think there is still a richness in the tone, but typically my favorite voices are the thicker, richer voices. (I don't know the technicals to describe it, but I prefer Taeil's voice to Doyoung's or Jaehyun's voice to Haechan or Jungwoo. Similarly, in EXO, my favorite voice is D.O.'s. Chen and Baek can hit more notes, but there is a richness I love about D.O.'s voice. Tbf, I love all of these voices!)

(Jaehyun is a baritone, it's worth noting, and you can hear the difference in his tone, although he too is singing in a higher part of his voice)

Dream is a squidge higher and lighter, but still rich.

This light, thinner tenor I don't care for.

All of these are "bright" songs to try and show apples to apples. It's not fair to pull out a 127 power ballad here.
