Gaon Chart is now called 'Circle Chart' + added features 'Global K-pop Chart' and visible weekly sales on the Album Chart!

  • It's Gaon's version of Billboard Global 200, which excludes the US.

I guess this excludes SK? Or weights global streaming more?

The Global 200 itself doesn't exclude the U.S., it is split into 2 separate charts. One is the regular Global 200 and another is the Global 200 excluding the U.S.

    Right

But most people just refer to the Hot 100 when looking at US chart performance and not the Global Chart

    Weird.

YGPlus is already designated ISRC in Korea. Which makes sense b/c they're probably the biggest music distributor in Korea.

YG PLUS announced on the 2nd that it has been selected as an International Standard Record Code ( ISRC ) manager by IFPI in London . ISRC is the only international standard code for recording and a permanent identification code, which is widely used internationally due to its high efficiency in copyright management. In particular, ISRC sound source registration is essential for global music platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon, and Desser, and it is a necessary code to distribute sound sources and music videos to the global market. Currently, only 5 of the domestic distribution companies are registered as ISRC managers, and many distribution companies still receive ISRC through domestic music integration management system ( MIMS ) or overseas companies . YG PLUS was selected as the final manager in recognition of its internal distribution system and professional competence, and plans to distribute the sound source and video to the world by directly issuing ISRC codes to domestic agencies .

  • girl Spotify is nugu in Korea, she’s already in her grave melon will just join her

Spotify just launched there without its free tier. I'd give it time.

But YouTube Music has already overtaken FLO, VIBE and Genie and coming for Melon's neck.

    Link

"The Korea Times has the story, reporting on new data from research firm Mobile Index. It suggests that YouTube Music has grown from a 1.7% share of the South Korean music streaming market in 2019 to 19.22% by the end of 2021.

That means YouTube Music has overtaken services like Flo (with its 13.31% share according to the research) and Vibe (4.08%) and is pretty much neck-and-neck with the second biggest service, Genie (19.24%).

The biggest DSP, Melon, is still some way ahead with a 37.28% market share. However, that has fallen from nearly 50% in 2018 according to the story, which adds that YouTube Music’s monthly active users grew from around 630,000 at the start of 2021 to 1.26m by the start of December."

  • I'm interested in the Eco-Chart and am looking forward to how this chart compares to like Oricon in Japan and BB in the US. I think it's a great move to really track KPOP's global reach and popularity -- hopefully better data.

From what I read from the Korea Joongang Daily online:

"The tracker aims to operate a category tentatively named “clean chart” which ranks K-pop albums based on eco-friendliness, hoping to encourage K-pop agencies to produce albums and merchandise that have minimal impact on the environment.

“Until now, only a few agencies individually made efforts to make their albums more environmentally friendly,” Choi said. “Now, we hope to lead the entire K-pop industry to start using eco-friendly ingredients for albums or switch to digital albums.”

According to Choi, Circle Chart will put an emphasis on indexes like streaming and downloads, and have the digital indexes serve as its main chart rather than album sales. Choi explained that the measure is an adjustment to reflect the reality that “K-pop albums have become more of a merchandise rather than something for actually listening to music."

“Although album sales numbers still hold great importance among fandoms, online streaming and downloads are how K-pop releases are mostly consumed,” he said. “We will sum up all the data from the world’s paid music streaming services and announce it via daily and weekly charts.”
