Netflix: Keep Sweet Pray and Obey

  • Not sure why I decided to creep myself out by watching this limited series, but as it's #2 on Netflix right now, I'm not the only one.

I'm only through the first of four episodes right now. So far, the people they've interviewed baffle me. The ones who were kids when all this went down, I get it. But the adults who chose to be given away like property? W.T.F. :pepe-tea:

  • Oh, right, here's the trailer if you want to creep yourself out too.

  • my goodness, i'm definitely not watching now! =O

I just finished it. It ends very sad, like an emotional gut punch.

I read a criticism of it that, as a documentary, it focused "too much" on these individual stories and not enough on all the facts and statistics of it all, but finishing it, it's like the only reason I finished was because I found that I cared what happened to these very real people.

It's so sad that something like this could go on and everyone around just knew about it, and did nothing. ;( Hell, TLC even had a ~fun~ TV show back in the day, Sister Wives.

I might tackle it this weekend, you got me curious, ngl. But i'm so freaked out about sects and mistreatments to women and stuff. I'll measure it as i go along i guess. thanks hun :finger-heart:

  • Also women who allow their young girls to live in such conditions deserve to have their kids taken away from them. Being a victim does not mean you get to make your children victims as well, so sick

They didn’t saw themselves as victims. That’s the thing. They were brainwashed to believe all this bs. So they did this to their children thinking it’s the right thing to do. All though some saw through the nonsense and left or were kicked out if they spoke up and were framed to be traitors.

  • This sect was so obsessed with their pedophilic polygamous marriage to young girls, that they kicked out thousands of young boys, sometimes scattered in the middle of nowhere (probably hoping they would die) to have more young girls for older men.

This dude is psychopath, pure evil… you can see it alone in his eyes and stare. He is still leading the church from prison and he still has thousands of followers. They can’t be helped.

  • Ugh that's so infuriating that they use religion against them and brainwash them so horrendously, I wish there was more talk about religious abuse but there's a huge stigma on this topic

I don’t think there is a stigma. In fact the dangerous brainwashing by sects and cults is discussed a lot and thankfully it has helped the downfall of many such organizations.

AKP is just not the place for such discussions as many people in here are here for Kpop and Kpop related topics.

  • Honestly maybe it's a regional thing but where I'm from these things are seen as infringing on the rights of religious practice and many don't want to discuss things like this. At least not until real damage is done, then they ask what went wrong ☠

They had a little part in the ... third episode maybe? Where the prosecutor had to make it very clear they weren't targeting these people because of their religion, but because they were abusing children.

I agree with SandyBee3 - the end where the authorities confirmed that Warren was still leading the church from prison was so harrowing. It makes me want to read or learn more about how being brainwashed at such a young age affects your ability to put together the truth. They had what he did to kids on tape! He's not in prison because people think he's kind of weird.

  • You'll have to let me know what you think. It's much more emotional than it is graphic. It makes me want to give these poor women a hug.

Ok, well, i've tackled most of it this afternoon. This guy's seriously f*cked in the head, bad! And some of those poor women are, im sorry, a bit naive and dumb! I mean, on one hand, i do realize that they were literally born in the environment and basically groomed to think and act in that pathetic way of life. But then again, you'd think that human nature's basic survival instincts would kick in at some point!

Some of them have lit up and i'm happy about that but according to the narrative, thousands remain there despite the obvious! Even after that sicko was put away! What gives! They should just storm the place and force them out, out of sheer human compassion and deliverance!

I dunno, really. This is beyond my wildest comprehension. How could someone value following an absolute monster like that! The polygamy aspect is laughable at best! I mean, in the end, a polygamous scheme always has a favourite/dominant spouse and the others are like servants or slaves, basically. Again, i wouldn't put up with any of that shit even if my life depended on it! That part where he's in Vegas having a good time with his little click in "civilian attire" made me sick to my stomach! He knew about the real life on the outside, yet he played the game for his own benefit to keep all of them enslaved!

In a nutshell, I hope that sick f*ck rottens in a jail cell for good! They can feed him to the lions as far as i'm concerned!

Thanks for the recommendation hun :finger-heart: I'll most definitely skip the next one like that :teeheek:

nothing to do with you! <3 obviously! lol

Like i said in my more elaborate comment above, this entire scheme should be officially declared unlawful by the government and they should raid the entire place to deliver them from certain mental or physical death! There's no reason for something like that to exist in 2022. The authorities failed to do it properly in episode 3 with the Texas migration. They should have brought this shit up all the way to the supreme court BEFORE taking the kids away like they did! Anyhow, in the end, the government was just as plain dumb as their "divine" figures were! That's my take on it.

  • I totally get it! It actually makes me really curious to learn why people who are brainwashed could be persuaded so easily to do things that are against base instincts, like the mother who let them take two of her kids to the new ranch.

I'll warn you off any other creepy documentaries I come across!

It’s not that easy. Everyone has the right to practice their religion, I think this is a common Law in almost every democratic country. You can’t stop immigrations of such organizations either. If they buy land they can do whatever as long as they don’t break laws. They can’t just declare the sect as unlawful, they can only do something if they violate human rights and even here they can only arrest those who broke the law. They needed evidence before they would get a warrant to search the place. Right now all the people who didn’t left are there by their own will brainwashed or not. They don’t want to be rescued and they don’t trust anyone outside the commune, you can’t just raid the place and take them all out without their will. This is why they can only help individuals who tried and manage to flee. The only thing authorities can do now is keeping an eye on them. They can punish them for polygamy, but they can’t get rid of them.

well said Sandy. Sadly, you do bring up multiple valid points. Another impeding factor is the fact that they simply cannot put an undercover agent in there, like they would with gangs or organized crime. I mean, you're either born and groomed on site or you're not! That's a major obstacle because it would surely allow law enforcement to expedite an investigative process in that shit hole!

But yeah, i hear you! it's not that simple and i concur. But surely, if they managed to get a warrant to raid that temple's vault at the end, they could surely do it again! For good measure!

Thanks for your input, very insightful! You're a smart cookie, obviously! :finger-heart:
