Are vocals important for global/American success?

  • Bts, Blackpink, Twice are the biggest Kpop groups in America right now, but they aren’t exactly vocal powerhouses. So do vocals matter when it comes to breaking into America/being global?

    Approved the thread.
  • no not really. But you need charisma, stage presence and IT factor and obviously songs that are palatable to the west.

  • You said it yourself, no it doesn't. However, for domestically in Korea and SEA countries, vocalists tend to be more popular than dancers/performers. IU, Taeyeon, Lim Young-woong, etc.

  • no, the only thing you need to do in the West, is sing live.

no lip synch + charisma (off stage) + stage prescence and you're good

  • no, it’s more about hooks. in fact, i think Fearless would do really well in English and possibly with that K-Pop style prechorus changed. it’s also more about HOW you use your vocals to create an effect vs “wow look how good at singing I am”. we have singing shows for that type of flexing but those performers don’t amount to much.

  • Based on your examples, definitely not. Those 3 groups are amongst the weakest vocally (across the whole group) and they are still so popular.

  • ofcourse it does but it isn't the main factor

  • GOT the Beat flopped in the US while it got the best vocal line ever ;-)

? Are we forgetting the many times that American and other western artists haven't sung live but lipsynced?

Don't act out that misplaced, undeserved American/Western superiority complex again, pretending all the top American artists rarely or never lipsync because it would be the biggest lie told by someone this year.

GOT the Beat were never directed towards an American audience. You're confusing it with SuperM that was directed towards the US.

As a temp project group, GOT the Beat's song did ok in South Korea (better than some top groups latest comebacks).

  • I think generally (but not always) songwriting, production and vocals are important in the west, dancing and flirting with your audience not so much

I do think western artists are more likely to sing live, it's rare to see a 100% live performance from a kpop artist nowadays

  • Nope. See Taylor Swift’s whole career.

And they all got dragged for those performances so where do we move on from here :huuh:

The difference between the reception for kpop and American music lip sync is that the latter at least don’t try to make excuses for their lip synced stages

  • Vocals are important but it’s not everything. The fact that rap is the biggest and most popular music in the US should give you a clue.

People care more for the substance and authenticity rather than exceptional talents although this matters too. It’s just that people are more likely to stan an artiste with individualism and very eccentric, which is something the kpop training system robs from the idols

  • Not at all. there are so many western artist that are huge but can't sing so clearly america doesn't care about vocals. And like you've pointed out, three kpop groups huge in america are the weakest vocalists when compared to some other kpop groups.

I find it interesting that many top western stars are heard in these countries you speak of, but the 3 you mentioned have never been heard in America. :/:/
