I. Introduction
Super Junior (슈퍼주니어) is an eleven-member Korean pop boy band formed by SM Entertainment. They are managed by producer Lee Soo Man and were the largest group under SM Entertainment for almost 7 years. They debuted in November 2005, with the album SuperJunior05 (TWINS) as a twelve-member group but added a thirteenth, Kyuhyun, in May of 2006, with the release of their first single, "U". They became well known after their hit 2009 song "Sorry, Sorry".
II. Career
2005 – 2006: Debut, 1st Studio Album
Before the group settled with their current name, the company labeled them as simply Junior, a representation of the members' young ages when they first joined SM Entertainment. However, after the members' showcased their different talents to the company, their company finalized their name to Super Junior. Soon the group became officially Super Junior 05, the first generation of Super Junior. Super Junior had been known for their line-up, a concept being very similar to Japan's girl group Morning Musume. Intended to be a rotational group, there was to be new members replacing some of the old members each year, forming a new Super Junior generation every time. Super Junior first performed as a group on November 6, 2005 on SBS Inkigayo, where they performed songs from their debut album, SuperJunior05 (TWINS). The album sold 28,536 copies in the first month of release and debuted at number three in the monthly chart of December 2005. Soon after the release of their album, Super Junior collaborated with fellow SM Entertainment group Dong Bang Shin Ki and released the single "Show Me Your Love". At the same time Super Junior continued to promote songs from their first album. In February 2006, Super Junior began performances for "Miracle", the second promotional single from their debut album. "Miracle" topped the music charts of Thailand, drawing interest from international markets.
They unofficially debuted at a showcase on the channel Mnet, on September 11, 2005. At the showcase, they performed various styles of hip-hop dancing, where they danced to B2K's "Take It to the Floor". The main dancers, Han Geng, Eunhyuk, and Donghae, performed a separate dance together, dancing to Usher's "Caught Up". However, the performance was only aired on May 16, 2006 as a segment in the Super Junior Show, the group's first television documentary. On May 23, 2006, SM Entertainment revealed a new member, Kyuhyun, who was discovered through a singing competition in 2005, as the thirteenth and youngest member. The new thirteen-member group released their new single, "U", online for free download on May 25, 2006 in Super Junior's official website. "U" had over 400 thousand downloads within five hours of release and it ultimately exceeded 1.7 million downloads, crashing the server. The physical edition of "U", with a total of three tracks, was released on June 6, 2006, eventually selling over 81,000 units by 2007. The single became one of Korea's most popular songs of the year, taking up #1 spots for five consecutive weeks on Inkigayo and M! Countdown. By the end of the year, Super Junior collected over seven awards in five of South Korea's top music award ceremonies, and was one of the three "Best Newcomer" winners at the 21st Golden Disk Awards. At that time, Super Junior K.R.Y., the first sub-unit of Super Junior that debuted on November 5, 2006, began to give separate performances away from the group to promote their new songs in the latter months of 2006.
2007: New subgroups & 2nd Album
In February 2007, a second subgroup, Super Junior-T, debuted. The group released their debut single "Rokkugo!!!" on February 23. Two months later, in April, Super Junior members participated on an original soundtrack for the first time, singing the opening and ending themes "Success" and "H.I.T" for the Korean drama, "H.I.T". On April 18th, 2007 Super Junior members Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, Shindong, and Kyuhyun were involved in a car accident. Kyuhyun was severely injured and suffered from a fractured hip, broken ribs, and various abrasions on his face. He was discharged 78 days later on July 5th, 2007. Leeteuk had glass impaled in his back and face, and had operations to remove the glass done by a plastic surgeon. Eunhyuk was also reported as having glass in his back, while Shindong walked out of the accident with only minor injuries. All activities were canceled for these four members. All Super Junior members, except Kyuhyun, managed to attend the 2007 Korea Times Music Festival appearance in the United States.On September 20th, Super Junior released their second album Don't Don!. With this release they launched their new, much harder image, including shaved heads, black clothing, and lots of hair dye. Their first single from the album, the title track, featured a violin solo performed by Henry, a new SM Entertainment recruit raised in Canada. Don't Don! sold over 60,000 units the first day of release and debuted at number one on the monthly chart of September 2007. Two months later, a repackage edition was released, including three new tracks. Although Don't Don! received mixed reviews from critics, the album went to sell more than 160,000 copies by the end of the year, becoming the second best-selling record of 2007. Super Junior received seven nominations at the 2007 Mnet/KM Music Festival, winning three of them, which included "Artist of the Year", termed by many as the highest recognition of the ceremony. Super Junior collected two more recognitions at the 22nd Golden Disk Awards, including a "Disk Bonsang".
For a while there was much speculation that Henry would be added to Super Junior. However, on October 2, 2007, SM Entertainment officially announced a third Super Junior unit, Super Junior-M, a subgroup designated for the Chinese market, and Henry was part of it. The announcement of the new unit created a controversy between the fans and the management as fans did not support to add new members to the subgroup. SM Entertainment further expounded on the fact that Super Junior's name should be considered a brand searching to unearth new talent worldwide. From October to December Super Junior worked on the project "Make the world a happy place with Super Junior" in which they participated and promoted various charity events including blood drives.
III. 2008-2009: 1st Asia Tour & Japanese Debut, 3rd Album and 2nd Asia Tour
Super Junior's first major tour, THE 1ST ASIA TOUR SUPER SHOW, started on February 22 to February 24 in Seoul. The tour covered nine different cities, including Bangkok, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Despite the controversies, Super Junior-M debuted in April 2008, consisting of Han Geng, Siwon, Donghae, Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, and the chinese members Henry and Zhou Mi, with a remake of Super Junior successful single, "U". On June 7, a new unit, Super Junior-Happy, debuted performing their first single at the 2008 Dream Concert. On the day before their debut, the unit held their first sign fan meeting to celebrate the success of the sales of their mini-album, COOKING? COOKING!. On July, the group announced that Super Junior will end subgroup activities at the end of the year and will come together to prepare for their third studio album, which was slated to release in 2009. Super Junior's held their Japan fanmeeting in the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo as a celebration for the grand opening of their official Japanese homepage that was opened on April 1, 2008, selling out 12,000 tickets in several days. Their first Japanese single, "U / TWINS", was released in Japan on July 9, 2008. The single peaked at #4 on Japan's Oricon Daily Chart in its first day of release. The single broke a new record for being the first single from a Korean group to debut in top 10 on Japan's Oricon Weekly charts. On August 2, Super Junior expanded their routes to Genting Highlands, Malaysia, being one of the top guest performers at the MTV Asia Awards 2008. They were the third SM Entertainment artist to win "Favorite Artist Korea" at the MTV Asia Awards after Kangta and BoA.
Super Junior's third album, SORRY, SORRY, was released on March 12, 2009 with acclaimed reviews. The title track of the album, "SORRY, SORRY" was digitally released on March 9, 2009. In less than a week after preorders were announced, over 150,000 copies were pre-ordered. SORRY, SORRY was their first album to debut at #1 on the Hanteo Charts, and it sold over 29,000 copies the first day, defeating Seo Taiji's record of 25,000 copies. Promotions for the album started March 13 with the performance of "SORRY, SORRY" and "Niga Joheun Iyu (Why I Like You)" on Music Bank. Two weeks later, "SORRY, SORRY" became the number one song of the week on the same program. During the group's performance on music program Inkigayo on March 15, ratings went up to as high as 14%, the highest in recent years. From March to May, "SORRY, SORRY" collected a total of ten #1 awards with consecutive wins in Korea, having the single becoming a national and international success, and has since been the group's best-selling single in South Korea. Only a month after it's release, the album became South Korea's best-selling album of 2009. "SORRY, SORRY" was also a critically and commercially successful hit in other Asian countries, opting the group to become the only overseas representative for the second time at Taiwan's annual Golden Melody Awards. The single collected a total of ten number-one awards for ten consecutive weeks in Korea, and stayed as #1 for a record-breaking 37 weeks in Taiwan KKBOX KPOP chart. SORRY, SORRY was a best-selling Korean-language album in Taiwan, Thailand, China, and the Philippines, in which the latter listed the album to be the first K-pop album to reach #1 in music charts from the country. After the success of "SORRY, SORRY", Super Junior commenced their second Asia-wide concert tour SUPER SHOW 2, on July 17, 2009 in Seoul. Though Kibum was shown in the ads and promotional videos for Super Show 2, he did not officially participate in the concert tour, and announced his temporary leave from the group to pursue his acting career. Super Junior won three awards in the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards: "Overseas Viewers Award", "Mobile Popularity Award" and "CGV Popularity Award", despite not attending. Super Junior's SORRY, SORRY also won "Disk Daesang" at the 24th Golden Disk Awards.
On December 10, 2009, a music video called "SORRY, SORRY - Answer" was released through SM Entertainment's YouTube page. The song was included on their second live album, The 2nd ASIA TOUR CONCERT ALBUM SUPER SHOW 2, also released on the same date. That same month, selected member of Super Junior released the single "SEOUL" in a collaboration with also selected member of Girls' Generation. Also in December, Han Geng filed for contract termination from SM Entertainment, claiming that the provisions of his contract were unlawful, harsh, and against his rights and Kang In announced his hiatus to fulfill his two-year mandatory military service.
IIII. 2010 – 2011: 4th & 5th Studio Albums & 1st World Tour
With only ten members left, Super Junior went off to release their fourth studio album, Miina (BONAMANA), in May 2010. Although the album did not fare well as SORRY, SORRY critically, it sold over 300,000 copies in South Korea, outselling SORRY, SORRY. The album remained at the top of Taiwan KKBOX KPOP Charts for 61 weeks, breaking their own previous record of the said chart.
To promote the album, Super Junior embarked on their third Asia-wide tour, SUPER SHOW 3, and had sold-out concerts for each stop. In February 2011, Super Junior released a 3D movie version of their third tour, SUPER SHOW 3 3D, in all CGV and Primus movie theaters. The movie debuted at #6 on the box office charts and went off to become the best-selling 3D movie in Korea. After touring in Japan, they released the special album Super Junior Japan Limited Special Edition - Super Show 3 Kaisai Kinen Ban in February 2011, which debuted at #2 on Japan's Tower Records online sales charts. The DVD version of the special album also debuted at #2, while the CD version debuted at #10. The album also remained at #3 spot on the Oricon Daily Chart for two consecutive days and #6 on the Oricon Weekly Chart. Following their commercial success in Japan, the group released a Japanese version of "Miina (BONAMANA)" in June 2011, which debuted at #2 on the Oricon Daily Singles Chart, selling over 59,000 copies in the first week of release. Between SUPER SHOW 3 stops, the group took part in the SMTown Live '10 World Tour and toured in Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo and New York along with other SM Entertainment-managed artists, performing outside of Asia for the first time. Super Junior's performances were well received by the media, and they were honored as Korea's National Pop Culture Icon for their role in spreading the Hallyu Wave, receiving the Minister of Culture Awards by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism at the Pop Culture Art Awards.
They were featured on CNN's Talk Asia program, and talked about their popularity and strategy for advancing into the world music industry. The group has achieved recognition beyond Asia, reaching notability in Europe, North America, and South America. Their fifth album, Mr. Simple, realesed in August 2011, debuted at #1 on the Gaon Chart, selling 287,427 copies. The album stayed on the top of the chart for four weeks, and sold over 441,000 copies in South Korea by October 2011. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard World Albums Chart and #17 on Oricon Album's Chart. The album's title single "Mr. Simple" won first place on the first day of the group's comeback performance on the music show M! Countdown. In September 2011, Heechul left temporarily for military service. Super Junior began their first world tour, SUPER SHOW 4, in November 2011. The group realesed a Japanese version of "Mr. Simple", in December 7, 2011. The group, with Super Junior-M members Zhou Mi and Henry, also recorded the song "Santa U Are The One" for the 2011 SMTown Winter 'The Warmest Gift' album, released on December 13, 2011. In addition, the unit SUPER JUNIOR DONGHAE + EUNHYUK released their first digital single "Tteotda Oppa (Oppa, Oppa)" on December 16, and performed the single on Music Bank that same day.
IIIII. 2012 – 2013: 6th Studio Album, 2nd World Tour, & 1st Japanese Album

On January 11, Super Junior participated at the 26th Golden Disk Awards which was held at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan. The group ended up bringing home four awards: "Popularity Award", "MSN Japan Award", "Disk Bonsang" and the grand prize "Disk Daesang". This was followed by further successes at the 21st Seoul Music Awards on January 19, at which they were awarded the "Disk Bonsang" and "Disk Daesang".
On January 13, Super Junior were crowned "Album King" in Taiwan, after Super Junior’s 5th album Mr. Simple and 4th album Miina (BONAMANA) ranked #1 and #2 on both album and music sections of the Korean Music Chart 2012. Significantly, Super Junior ranked #1 on the KKBOX K-Pop hart for 64 consecutive weeks with the single "Miina (BONAMANA)", marking the longest record in the history of KKBOX K-Pop chart. They then reached #1 with "Mr. Simple" for 46 consecutive weeks as of 4 July 2012, effectively knocking themselves from the #1 spot. On February 22, Super Junior won "Album Of The Year" for the 3rd Quarter at the Gaon Chart Awards and on March 13, Super Junior won "Favorite K-pop Video" for "Mr. Simple" at the MYX Music Awards. Super Junior also successfully completed their world tour SUPER SHOW 4 in 10 cities worldwide including Seoul, Osaka, Taipei, Singapore, Macao, Bangkok, Paris, Shanghai, Jakarta and Tokyo for 6 months. Combined with their three Asia tours and SUPER SHOW 4, Super Junior’s concert brand gathered a total of 900,000 audiences. When June 2012 came around, SM Entertainment announced that Kang In would re-join Super Junior for the group's sixth album, Sexy, Free & Single which was released online on July 1 and in stores on July 4, 2012. SM Entertainment released the MV for "Sexy, Free & Single" on July 3. A new version of the album was released on July 16, having only a different cover. On August 7, Super Junior released the repackage album for Sexy, Free & Single called SPY, including four new songs. On October 30, 2012, leader Leeteuk enlisted for his two year mandatory service.
Sexy, Free & Single managed to rank high in iTunes in several countries including Australia, France, Peru and Japan. It also ranked #3 on Billboard World Albums. The album debuted at #1 on the Gaon Chart, selling 335,744 copies in one month. Staying on the chart as #1 place for three weeks in a row, 459,182 copies have been sold in only two months. Furthermore, Sexy, Free & Single also debuted at #1 on Gaon Album Chart with 356,431 copies sold in year 2012. Super Junior rank #1 place on Hanteo's Top 5 K-Pop Artists 2012 winning Hanteo "Singer Award" and also rank #1 place in Hanteo "Album Award" 2012 also winning this award. Sexy, Free & Single was placed #1 for several weeks on Taiwan KKBOX KPOP chart having all album songs charted. The Japanese version of this song, which was released on August 22, has sold over 118,902 units making the single gold certified. Super Junior were nominated for "Best Asian Act" in MTV Europe Music Awards, showing one more time their popularity around the world. In October 2012, Super Junior won "Teen Style Icon" award in 2012 Style Icon Awards and on November they also won the "Best Artist Group Award" the 19th Korean Entertainment Arts Awards. On November 30, Super Junior attended the Mnet Asian Music Awards where they won three awards, "Album of the Year", "Best Global Group - Male" and "Best Line Award", being the second year in row that Super Junior wins "Album of the Year". Their SUPER SHOW 4 3D movie was awarded with "Work of Art Award" at the International 3D Festival being the only singer together with GLAM winning an award.
On January 15, 2013, Super Junior won "Disk Daesang" at 27th Golden Disk Awards, being the 3rd "Disk Daesang" that Super Junior has won, and the second in a row. Super Junior announced their second world tour in February 2013. SUPER SHOW 5 began in March starting with Seoul. The group then went to China, Japan, South America, North America and Europe. Yesung enlisted for his mandatory military service on May 6, 2013. Come July, Super Junior released their first official Japanese album, Hero, including new songs and remakes of their old successes. The album reached #2 on the Oricon Charts and charted for 13 weeks. On November 10, Eunhyuk, Kang In, Siwon, and Kyuhyun hold a special lecture at Oxford University. Their special lecture entitled 'Super Junior: The Last Man Standing' took place at the Oxford Union Debating Chamber. They were the speakers at this event, which was co-hosted by Oxford University Korea Society (OUKS), Oxford University Asia-Pacific Society (OUAPS), and Oxford Union. In December, Super Junior released the Japanese single Blue World, that reached #3 on the Oricon Charts, and charted for 8 weeks.
IIIV. 2014 – 2015: 7th Studio Album, 3rd World Tour, & 10th Anniversary
In August 2014, SM Entertainment announced that Leeteuk and Heechul would re-join Super Junior for the group's seventh album, MAMACITA, which was released online on August 29th and in stores on September 1st. With only three days of sales, MAMACITA ranked #1 on Billboard's World Albums chart. Super Junior began their third world tour SUPER SHOW 6 in September 2014, with the first stop at Seoul. Super Junior successfully completed their three-day concert at Jamsil Arena, Seoul from September 19-21, 2014 and marked their 100th concert worldwide on the 21st. Super Junior were the first Korean artist to perform 100 concerts worldwide.
On October 27th, Super Junior released the special edition for their seventh album, called THIS IS LOVE. The special edition of MAMACITA ranked #1 on the real time charts of Hanteo Chart, Synnara Records and more as soon as it was released. On July 8, 2015, SM Entertainment announced that Yesung would re-join Super Junior for the special album, DEVIL, which was released online and in stores on July 16 to celebrate the group's 10th anniversary. Super Junior first showcased its song during its encore concert SUPER SHOW 6 in Seoul, over two days from July 11 to 12. Super Junior performed 4 songs from the album, including the title song "DEVIL". On August 16th, Super Junior won 2 awards, "International Arist" and "Best Fandom", in the Teen Choice Awawrds. On August 18th, Kibum, who has been on hiatus since 2009, announced his leave from SM Entertainment and Super Junior via Instagram. On September 10, 2015, SM Entertainment announced that Super Junior released part two of their special 10th anniversary album, MAGIC, on September 16th. The album was planned to thank the fans who loved and supported the group, included the 10 previously-released tracks from the original special album, as well as lead single "MAGIC", "You Got It", "Dorothy" and "Sarang♥", for a total of 14 tracks. It was the last album released before Eunhyuk, Donghae and Siwon entered the military.
On November 6th, Super Junior's 10th anniversary since their debut, SM Entertainment announced that Super Junior had their own exclusive label management, Label SJ. SM Entertainment stated, "We established Label SJ to give Super Junior our wholehearted support and an ideal system for managing the group." Though the new label will be affiliated with SM Entertainment, it will be independently and wholly responsible for Super Junior’s management, producing their albums, and all group, unit, and individual activities.
IIV. 2016 – present: Military Discharge & 8th-10th Studio Albums
On January 4, 2017, it was announced that Super Junior will make a comeback in the second half of 2017. This will be their first comeback as a group within 2 years. Members Kangin, due to his second DUI in 2016, and Sungmin, due to fans opposing his mistreatment of them during his sudden 2014 marriage, did not participate in 2017's SMTOWN concerts, and will not participate in their upcoming album, along with those still in military enlistment. Both Eunhyuk and Donghae were discharged from the military in July 2017. The nine-member lineup of Super Junior released their ninth studio album, Time Slip, on October 14, 2019, with Sungmin to have personal activities outside the group in the meantime.They temporarily halted performances and promotion due to the death of labelmate and close friend Sulli. The album is supported by four pre-release singles, "Show", "Somebody New", "The Crown", and "I Think I", and lead single "Super Clap". On October 12, the group embarked on their eighth tour ahead of their album release, Super Show 8: Infinite Time, starting in Seoul, South Korea. On October 20, Super Junior resumed their activities by appearing on Inkigayo to perform their lead single "Super Clap". However, Heechul did not participate with group due to his injury. The album also won first place in weekly music shows M Countdown and Music Bank. Time Slip received its platinum album certification on December 12, 2019. They released their second Japanese mini-album, I Think U on January 29, 2020.
Super Junior released their tenth studio album, The Renaissance, on February 16, 2021. A pre-release single titled "The Melody" was released on November 6, 2020 to celebrate the group's 15th anniversary, and the band also released a Japanese compilation album on January 27, 2021 in celebration of their 15th anniversary.
