Is it really desperate? I mean their impact was big.
For people who have experienced the 2nd generation, these groups will always have a different value than 3rd generation groups anyway. But groups like Girls Generation, which was the only female group to stand up to all the male groups and win an album of the year, or BigBang, which led the YouTube hype with their videos, these groups will always be special. There was also more interaction between these groups, which is something I miss in third generation groups.
Groups like Blackpink, Twice and BTS have the advantage that YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music are so popular and helped them to reach this worldwide success. Second generation groups didn't have that advantage (for the simple reason that YouTube and other platforms weren't as popular as they are today) and yet they managed to become famous beyond South Korea. Especially SNSD and BigBang.
I think that alone should be a reason to pay respect to these groups, but of course you don't have to mention it every chance you get. Every generation has its advantages and disadvantages.
