One of my biggest complaints for sure. Songs literally cant breathe anymore.
I understand why Kpop keeps the songs short, it's hard af to put out interesting choreo for 3 minutes, let alone 4 or 5, shit could get boring real fast for the audience. Also much easier to dance for 3 minute intervals rather than 4 or 5 minutes, like in a concert.
But in general songs have gotten so short that they seem just like commercials and ads for the group. There was a time when pop music wasnt like this, it was about real musicality. I have so many favorite songs in the 5-10 minute range, here is just one example of one of the best power ballads of all time.

All these reforms over the years are making charts data threads useless, because you just can’t compare the charts properly prior and after such reforms, especially when it’s about longevity of songs. XD

I had a similar question on the old AKP forum in 2019 and no one knew then either. My theory is, the most heard radio stations in Korea don’t play much Kpop outside of the already popular acts. Because - for example - how could the „general public“ miss out on „Brave Girls - Rollin“ if it was on the radio in 2017… ^

I can imagine some groups from small companies getting blocked in some way in Korea for many reasons (possible reasons: big 3 & CJ Ent. etc. don’t want another outsider to outgrow them, and the limited spots on tv, cf, and idol pool which they want for themselves, so they use their connections to prevent it).. A group like Ateez comes to mind, because I remember things like „a Korean tv station cutting parts out where Ateez was mentioned“ from a program and other stuff like that (and I can imagine that... Their song „Answer“ for example was one of the best of 2020 - a real breakthrough song, but strangely it went unnoticed in Korea).
But worldwide you’re right - no one is stopping these groups, that’s why album sales numbers are getting bigger every year.
