KPOP Stans Act Like Freaks Towards Skinny Idols

  • I guess I'm the only person that knows skinny people in real life, i.e. some of my class mates and coworkers, and unlike kpop stans I don't gossip about their physical or mental health, I don't accuse them of having mental illness or setting a bad example, and I don't insult them with words like "gross" or "skeleton".

Since I wouldn't treat people this way in real life, I don't treat idols this way online either, you wanna know why?

    1. Unless I'm close with someone I have no way of knowing the status of their mental or physical health.

    2. It comes off like insecurity or projection to assume every thin person has some illness.

    3. Even if someone does have an eating disorder, it's not my place to talk about it, as my insensitive comments could make their disorder worse, and considering I'm not a doctor (and I'm sure 99% of these kpop stans aren't) it's really not my place to give my two cents.

    4. Nobody deserves insults and to be singled out for their body, especially if they're sick and dealing with negative body image.

  • Exactly, people should stfu when talking about skinny and fat bodies

  • most of these comments usually come from the western kpop fans and you know how obesity is glorified in west or if a girl lacks huge rack or ass then they are bodyshamed.

these are my favourite kind of DUMB comments

obesity isn't glorified, almost all Western popstars and actresses are also super skinny and do crazy diets/fitness regimes to stay that way. At most you're allowed to have bigger chest and butt, but your waist better be ant like.

K-Pop diets are known to be extreme, K-Pop idols have spoken about losing weight constantly, have had health issues due to this, but fans will still pretend like they're all naturally thin and there's no issues there, when let's face it a whole bunch of idol are #goals for the thinspo/eating disorder community online for a reason.

nobody should make derogatory comments towards any idol but there's quite a few idols that I purposefully ignore pictures of because I find it triggering (as someone who suffered from anorexia). And all of those idols are praised a ton for their beauty and their body online. The ones who get the worst comments are always the ones who weigh more than the standard, or gained weight recently.

obesity isn't glorified here it's just have curves that's glorified (they're VERY different), but the rest it correct

  • you're ignoring the fact that these extremely underweight kpop idols have teenage fans idolising their weight and constantly comparing themselves to them, not to mention these idols being worshipped in ED spaces. its just as bad to pretend that these issues don't exist or that these idols are "naturally skinny".

  • they rlly have some savior complex or something. And they really think "wow this idol is so unhealthy and has lost drastic amounts of weight due to mean comments from kurtz lets tell them some more but this time shame them for losing weight and tell them they have eating disorders and maybe that'll help the situation"

  • But idols aren't your friends or co-workers. Idols are public figures.

  • It's tricky. I have noticed that my pins of R and W tend to get saved primarily to ED boards. One of them I deleted because I was getting disturbed by how popular it was.

I try to not comment on idol's bodies anymore. I think even positive comments can have a negative effect. I think the only thing we can do really is protest toxic extreme dieting culture when we see it.

  • Something I've noticed is that even idols who are clearly a perfectly normal size get called skinny in the west, particularly in the US and I think it's because such a large number of people there are overweight that they can no longer tell the difference. They don't know what a normal weight body looks like. To them normal weight = underweight and overweight = normal weight because it's all they see all day. When the society you live in is so overweight, it distorts your perspective.

  • there's a boundary in commenting about someones physic, but this is a very weird take..

i hate to generalise, but probably 70% of these idols have body/weight issues, which is COMPLETELY understandable. imagine surviving not only in an industry OBSESSED with looks/weight, but living in a whole society where there's so much focus on appearance. i have barely seen any culture as severe as korean.

some of these idols are indeed naturally skinny (also asian build and all), but if you believe that most of them are living healthy, idk what to tell you... when many idols casually talk about not/barely eating for days just to look better for cb (few times a year), you know things aren't okay. shaming is never justified, but many of them are (compared to your everyday neighbour) role models to very young and impressionable people.

  • I somewhat agree, but I feel like both sides are a little extreme.

I think it's fine to express concern because in the entertainment industry it's easy to feel pressured to have a specific appearance, especially young idols. But no one should be make gross comments about their appearance or trying to diagnose the person with ED when you know absolutely nothing about them. Saying they look "gross" or insisting they have ED is not the correct way to express concern.

From personal experience, I've also gotten a lot of bad comments about my weight. People asking me if I eat or think I am sick or something when I am just naturally skinny (it literally runs in the family too, we are just small built people and I blame my puny ass dad). No matter what I do gaining weight is just hard for me and I wish people would just shut up about it. Worse I'm a Westerner and curvy is the beauty standard here. It's one of the reasons I really like Kpop idols because I feel represented and validated about my own appearance that I don't normally receive where I am from.

  • I think it's fine to express concern if someone is either overly thin or obese. Though joking, or bringing it up for the sake of ridicule is wrong.
