In January 2018, Red Velvet came out with "Bad Boy," a hit that many proclaimed "song of the year." When I heard it, it immediately drew me in, reminding me of the western R&B-pop sound I loved.
Conceptually and sonically, everything was there. The outfits were in tune with western streetwear at the time. An English version of the song was released later that year, but I feel this should have been pushed out earlier to capitalize on the hype.
Not to mention... 2018 was the year BLACKPINK broke out with "DDU-DU DDU-DU." People who wouldn't otherwise give K-pop girl groups a chance were starting to become interested.
Here's an interview where they discuss the song's success:
I don't want to say "missed opportunity" because we might not have some of their later songs as a result, but it does make me wonder what could have been. I wouldn't mind them going into a direction more consistent with "Bad Boy."
