Was it SM with the decision or did she choose to do it?

Wendy had the best visuals in red velvet from debut to 2019 and probably now too
thing is, SM REALLY REALLY tries to push wendy back
her personality is really liked in korea but they keep giving varieties to other members
her vocals are probably the best in kpop and acknowledged by everyone but Seulgi ( decent of course but not remotely close ) gets more lines
her visuals are amazing with the most basic styling but she gets the weirdest styling that ANYONE can see doesnt suit her
at debut era she definitely garnered more attention than Irene which probably wasnt what SM wanted

true she and yeri are the best in varieties imo but they rarely got sent to variety shows.

ive always thought SM tried really hard to push the trio of Irene Seulgi and Joy and never their most talented idol for some reason
but hey, it's clearly working for them
irene and joy are huge brands now and can keep their group relevant

Irene not that pushed i think, with her visuals her cf offers are predictable.

Stop the indirect, lowkey shading of Wendy

She has always looked pretty, there was only a short period in 2017 where she looked worryingly anorexic but aside from that, it was mostly styling and weight changes that caused different looks.
In fact, Wendy has never look better than that she looked the past couple of years, as confirmed again with this comeback.

She was very naturally pretty before SM sent her off to their "make them all look like Taeyeon please" face clinic. I can't imagine she was happier with the after version. Not to say that she's unattractive either way though.

the jaw shave really was unfortunate but she still is pretty as heck and that didnt change
She was the hottest predebut, that's a fact. Thing is, unlike Irene whose PS enhanced her beauty, Wendy's unbalanced it.

She still look really good but sometimes her styling is awful, I've seen her wearing terrible wigs and unflattering clothes that made her look older. Its almost like her own stylists hate her. If you compare full performance videos of RV you can often see she's the worst dressed. Umpah Umpah era is one of the few exceptions.

With all due respect, that's not a fact, that's your opinion. Statements regarding beauty are ALWAYS an opinion, since (the perception of) beauty is subjective.
It's ok if you like her predebut looks the most when she looked youngest, personally I prefer her more refined, matured visuals (which does not mean old!) as seen since her mid '20s up till now.
I agree with you about her stylist, it almost felt like her stylists wanted to tone down her looks for a couple of years - and this also proves how styling can majorly influence someone's looks, completely outside of the realm of PS.

I didn't mean to say she isn't hot now but that she was the hottest out of the other RV girls predebut. Some idols get a glow up after debut, for her seems like SM wanted the opposite so she wouldn't overshadow their favorite, Irene. Like some other people already mentioned, during the debut era people still were in doubt about who was the visual between Wendy and Irene. Then they shaved her jaw when she absolutely did not needed it and started dressing her in the weirdest ways, that's when the attention started switching more to other members.

Let's be clear, there's nothing wrong with preferring an idol's looks from a certain era.
But this whole 'she looked better at debut, boohoo, SM has ruined her and now she looks marginally better than a troll' narrative, that should really just be canceled. It's not a compliment at all, it's an indirect, lowkey shade and sus asf, and should be regarded as such.
Try using it in combination with others, 'I like how Nayeon looked before her debut, she looked so much better than nowadays, a shame JYP ruined her looks with PS (facts only)' or 'Lisa's looks when they started were so much better and more natural looking, a pity YG had to ruin it with unnecessary PS (yeah, it's a fact)'.
Does that sound complimentary? Especially if people keep repeating it?
Imagine you're dressed to kill for the important grand party you're all excited about, you've had the ultimate glow up, your hair, styling and make up are on point, in short you look phenomenal, utterly fabulous. Then some of the people you meet up with for the party start commenting 'huh, you looked better at that special event 8 years ago, that was when you looked great, before all your weight and looks changes.'
Would you see that as a compliment, that they were praising you? And would you appreciate it when those persons would keep commenting like that every time you met up, year in year out?
It's more like something the mother of your boyfriend would say, who secretly thinks you're too low and don't deserve her son, to get her snipes in while being fake nice but trying not to be obvious about it. And in K-pop, it's something antis and others trying to diminish and shade someone's current visuals would say.
In case people need reminding, this is how Wendy's looks also have been the past years

But sure, let's especially keep talking about how great someone looked 8 years ago, because her looks the past years is nothing to compliment about, right? It's not as if she has absolutely been slaying it in fascinating and stunning looks the past couple of years

-
I think Wendy is pretty now but before she was so naturally stunning. I like her bright beauty now too but it's so sad that she had to keep getting procedures done. The jaw shave really ruined her natural beauty and then after her accident there was more surgery done. To be honest comparing Wendy Before to Wendy Now is like two different people.
