Yes, but mainly because kpops profile is getting bigger and bigger internationally and is currently very on trend alongside other Korean media and fashion. We're constantly seeing newer groups chart high on world charts and sell increasingly higher, even when "sound unheard" like nmixx. I constantly wonder when/if it will reach critical mass and we'll start seeing these big numbers fall.
I don't think it's a reflection on quality of music at all, just a reflection on a rapidly expanding and increasing market, also pushed along by some very clever companies jumping on that.
Ironically, it was 3g gen groups that really laid the groundwork for this to happen.

It's closer than what op is implying but it's true a lot of 3rd gen girl groups are either gone or past their prime

what do you mean? are you talking about the present ? coz if you're talking about the overall impact, 4th gen are nowhere as popular as 3rd gen.
