Do ppl exaggerate how big some Kpop groups are in Japan?

  • Especially bg, for example seventeen is known to be One of the most popular groups in Japan but they don’t even chart their songs more than a month on jpn bb hot 100

Seems like ppl just use sales as a measure when that’s not very reliable especially considering Japan as a whole is moving more to streamng now and the physical market has decreased

  • Groups like Seventeen are popular in Japan…within the kpop niche. Outside of the dedicated fandoms, kpop isn’t all that mainstream in Japan. Only a few kpop artists ever broke out of that niche status…DBSK, BoA, Kara, etc.

So while 17 might have lots of passionate Japanese fans, the locals aren’t really listening to their music like that.

  • It's the same in Korea though. Seventeen are monster sellers but they simply don't have half the charting or public love that say BTS get. It shows they have a solid fandom and but no public appeal. Does that mean they're a flop? No it's a different way of measuring success.

With Japan is the same story, some groups have strong fandoms but outside that but much else. That is still successful. I mean even someone like TVXQ who can sell albums and concert venues aren't setting the Japanese charts on fire, you could say their "success" is overrated.

  • its a bit double

you can be succesful in japan, see for example svt, but not be big in the japanese market (outside of kpop).

then you have groups like niziu & bts that are succesful AND big in the japanese market. it's all just a matter of how you look at it.

it's the same with most kpop groups in the west. they might be succesful (sell a lot), but except for bts and bp, barely any of those groups are actually big in the west (known by people outside the kpop niche).

  • The same way people call groups popular internationally, they are popular in kpop niche

  • Japan Nekkei entertainment did a power ranking in 2021, in the results showcased that Seventeen had the highest public interest at 82% among domestic and international acts. Sure, they may not be as popular as Bts and Twice, but the public has definitely heard of them.

Even on Oricon, they have the highest charting single with over 100 weeks on behalf of Kpop.

They make it on nearly every Japanese year end billboard chart.

Y’all ppl have a very bad habit of undermining svt and their achievements.

  • But, Seventeen is big in Japan. Fans are not just hyping them up.

  • they are very much popular in japan
