probably because people thought that spotify would have free streaming option (like in other countries )
I don't know why they did this in Korea where you don't have the free option. Weird.

This is surprising. I hadn't expected Melon to still have such a large market share.
Weren't they on a steady decline? Or has Melon stabilized? ![]()
Personally I have more trust in Instiz iChart and Gaon, for the simple reason that those are aggregates of the digitals of multiple sources and platforms, and not just one however large that one may be.
Also interesting to see the newcomers take more and more market share.
so, is youtube music just like spotify in that users are forced to premium version in korea?
Bugs needs to go
Most were sure spotify would overtake it or something lol
Because most people here are international fans and spotify is the #1 streaming service elsewhere.
I thought YouTube music is like spotify if you pay for it you can listen to albums with your screen off.
Basically. With Spotify the free tier runs in the background (at lest I think it does it's been a long time since I had the free tier), but with the free YouTube Music you get unlimited skips per hour.

The South Korean regulations probably don't allow free streaming. I can't use the free YouTube Music when I set my VPN to South Korea either. They make me sign up for premium. But I can cheat the system and listen through standard YouTube.

Not sure if theres any regulations against it, but it wouldnt surprise me if part of the deal they have with the big labels in korea is that they cant offer the free version there, seeing how most how them have their own investments in music services.

The music streaming platforms are regulated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. They're the ones that set the price of a song download and the revenue cut of the platforms. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't allow free streaming.
interesting

I didn’t know this exist. Damn
