What do you think a girl group need to sell a lot of albums? (Aespa, Twice,…)

  • Even though girl groups chart as well or more than boy groups, very few girl groups cross the 500,000 copies/album threshold that boy groups do. What might make groups like Izone, Aespa, Twice sell better than other girl groups? Like Itzy, Red Velvet or Gfriend also has hit songs like the groups mentioned above, but why do they not reach the same sales level?

  • a. Twice's sales are unmatched

    b. Sales in k-pop come down to three things

    1. Music quality

    2. Concept

    3. Popularity

if you don't have #3, you better do #1 and #2 absolutely perfect and to a tee. No experimental shit or anything like that (even though the GP does tolerate it from time to time). It's always good music and good concept. If you have both it's impossible to go unnoticed.

  • Personally when it comes to album sales, member's individuality is more important than song qualities and talents. How much that one or several members of the group have large enough dedicated fanbase to buy their albums. Itzy for example will probably eventually set themselves apart from other JYP groups with their own dedicated fanbase because at the moment, they still have multis from Onces, Blinks and Stays who probably wont dedicate their entire economy on just one artist

  • Not in a specific order:

    1. Chinese bars

    2. Members that shine individually

    3. Big label

    4. Catchy music

    5. “Quality” music

    6. Popularity

    7. Supportive fandom

    8. A massive hit

  • It's mostly just

    1. A dedicated and competitive fandom

    - Most girl groups don't have this for some reason. A dedicated fandom will spend money on the group and being competitive, they'll want to win over other groups, typically, on album sales where they can buy them en masse. Just look at how less popular boy groups sell much more than even the more popular gg's. Chinese and jp bars are vital in this.

    2. Fandom size or power

    - A dedicated and competitive fandom will not be able to do much if they don't have the size and power.

    ...

  • Considering these factors, even the quality of release can be overlooked.

Although, music quality can very much be helpful in getting the public's attention and growing the fandom.

    ...

  • They were able to connect with fans with such intensity that fans will buy whatever they sell because they need to support the group and see their success as theirs

But when it comes do Izone I think the fact some members were from akb48 helped too

  • this is the answer.

    execution is the hard part.

staff talent and resources/relationships of experienced names are naturally very important.

a recent example would be stayc/black eyed pilseung before high up was bought out by kakao.

initiative of members helps a lot with #3.

twice has always been active with vlive and ad hoc promotions.

(also, china is objectively not needed for kpop success.)
